Mock-up of SFR Plum Logo Sticker:

The most common response to the announcement of his 2009 signing to SFR was, “Who the fuck is Curtis Plum?” Let’s start with the basics: Curtis Plum is a character who makes Casio keyboard beats and raps in a Katharine Hepburn accent. But wait… there’s more!

Aside from the assistance from label mate Reanimator on a couple of tracks, all of Plum’s beats are completely self-produced. Every song on Call My Cellphone has a theme of its own, and these themes are turned upside-down with a dose of his signature style of twisted humor. Rather than the tread-worn punchline style of most hip hop ‘humorists’, Plum opens up his mind and empties it all over the borders of hip-hop topics, blurring the line between keeping it real and creating the surreal. It takes a special kind of emcee to tick off a list of 20 ways in which he can be “Up in Ya Face.”

Despite the lo-fi nature of his recordings, the music is oddly hypnotic. The melodies are as catchy as his lines are quotable, and when all elements come together the songs become maddeningly infectious. There is an old school sensibility to the sparseness in Plum’s production style, which gives the vocals adequate room to breathe. This is essential to Plum’s effectiveness, as he has a penchant for great storytelling. He goes from being a “Bike Cop” poppin’ wheelies of justice, to being Vin Diesel’s best friend… consoling him at yet another winless night at the Oscars.

Here are the facts: Curtis Plum is a bizarre cat who has delivered an incredibly fun and enjoyable album. This will most likely be the only album we get from the man, in this incarnation at least, so eat up every minute of it. Plum will not be touring any time soon due to how his last tour got cut short thanks to a horrible run-in with the Pittsburgh police. With that in mind, be sure to bump this album in your rides with cellphones held high. Pop a wheelie of justice. Or don’t. He’s cool either way.

Tracklist:

02 Up In Ya Face

04 Xbox Trife Life
05 Call My Cellphone
06 Vin Diesel
07 Get On The Dancefloor

Copyright Criminals DVD Available Now!

Copyright Criminals DVD Available Now!

Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of
musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic
expression, copyright law, and (of course) money.

This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of
New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For
more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers
have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new,
otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got
involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a
“copyright infringement.”The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s
founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital
Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record
labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Strange Famous, Ninja Tune, and more.

It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled,
such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most
sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled
musician, funk legend George Clinton. As artists find ever more
inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this
documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative
community: Can you own a sound?

KRS One’s “Gospel of Hip Hop” Book Available Now!

KRS One’s “Gospel of Hip Hop” Book Available Now!

The brain trust here at SFR is very particular about the tomes that we add to our literature section. Very particular. So far we’ve carried only 2 titles, and we strive to ensure that only the most sound theory and logical content take up space on our virtual shelves. Books that stretch the the boundaries of thought, provide vital information, and feed the soul.

We also will carry any book that can float freely in mid-air in front of the head of a legendary rapper (see photo above).

It is in this spirit that we present to you The Gospel of Hip Hop, by the inimitable Kris Parker, or, as his mama called him, KRS-One.

Click here to pick up your copy and get knowledged.

Here is his publisher’s write-up about the book:

The Gospel of Hip Hop: First Instrument, the first book from the I Am Hip Hop, is the philosophical masterwork of KRS ONE. Set in the format of the Christian Bible, this 800-plus-page opus is a life-guide manual for members of Hip Hop Kulture that combines classic philosophy with faith and practical knowledge for a fascinating, in-depth exploration of Hip Hop as a life path. Known as “The Teacha,” KRS ONE developed his unique outlook as a homeless teen in Brooklyn, New York, engaging his philosophy of self-creation to become one of the most respected emcees in Hip Hop history. Respected as Hip Hop’s true steward, KRS ONE painstakingly details the development of the culture and the ways in which we, as “Hiphoppas,” can and should preserve its future.

The Teacha also discusses the origination of Hip Hop Kulture and relays specific instances in history wherein one can discover the same spirit and ideas that are at the core of Hip Hop’s current manifestation. He explains Hip Hop down to the actual meaning and linguistic history of the words “hip” and “hop,” and describes the ways in which Hiphoppas can change their current circumstances to create a future that incorporates Health, Love, Awareness, and Wealth (H-LAW).

Committed to fervently promoting self-reliance, dedicated study, peace, unity, and truth, The Teacha has drawn both criticism and worship from within and from outside of Hip Hop Kulture. In this beautifully written, inspiring book, KRS ONE shines the light of truth, from his own empirical research over a 14-year period, into the fascinating world of Hip Hop.

KRS ONE is a philosopher, activist, author, lecturer, and emcee. Since founding canonical Hip Hop act Boogie Down Productions in the mid-1980s, he has released a granite-solid catalog of 19 full-length albums, along with a star-studded list of collaborations. In 1988 he founded the Stop the Violence Movement, a collective of artists, activists, educators, and entertainers exploring the roots of violence while working to promote the development of positive conflict resolution methods; he is currently producing an album celebrating the organization’s 20th anniversary, with contributions by Nelly, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, The Game, Hakiem Green, Grant Parks, Duane “Da Rock” Ramos, and many others. KRS ONE is an accomplished public speaker who has delivered lectures at over 500 colleges, universities, and other venues. In addition to The Gospel of Hip Hop, he is the author of The Science of Rap (1995) and Ruminations (Welcome Rain, 2003). Currently, KRS-One is touring the United States with Stop the Violence, urging America’s urban centers to seek non-violent conflict resolution over revenge and war.

Who are Awol One and Ecid? Are they shape-shifting heroes from hiphop’s distant past sent back to the future? Are they animal poets trapped in a shell of b-boy bodies? Are they MTV reality show robots in training? Are they skeleton monsters? Are they made of flesh or circuits?

No one is exactly sure what they are, they just are…

While touring the Midwest years ago – Los Angeles MC/Artist Tony aka Awol One and Minneapolis MC/Producer Jason aka Ecid began building the foundation for a classic collaboration between two of indie-hiphop’s most unpredictable talents and original voices.

Two years and many L.A. / Minneapolis flights later they have constructed a cohesive album built on label Fill In The Breaks trademark production and balanced by Awol and Ecid’s knack for witty sarcasm and melodic hooks. Like too many forced and ill planned collaborations before them, this new duo had no intentions of just running through the motions – they wanted to make an unapologetic, raw and focused record.

From the first horn stab on the opening track “Root For The Villain”, to the epic posse-cut “Calm Down” and the sure-fire anthem “Clever Marketing”, one thing is for sure –

Awol One and Ecid are…

SFR presents: Kurtis SP “No Passenger” AVAILABLE NOW!

SFR presents: Kurtis SP “No Passenger” AVAILABLE NOW!

No Passenger is the debut release from Australian producer Kurtis SP, the beatmaker behind Sage Francis’ “Hell Of A Year.” Weaving hundreds of disparate samples, along with touches of live instrumentation, into a thoughtful and evocative tapestry, No Passenger is ntrospective and melancholy, yet positive and hopeful.

Available now from SFR as a digital download and a limited edition digipak CD!

Check out Kurtis’ official Australian label press release:

No Passenger, the debut release from Australian producer Kurtis SP, is the culmination of ten years’ development.  Kurtis first made a name for himself in the late 90s while playing drums in one of Australia’s first live hip hop groups, Shin-Ki-Row.  The Human Drum Machine (as he was once billed) was renowned for simulating the feel of programmed drums on a live kit.  Then, wanting the freedom to work independently, things took a turn, 180 degrees:  he sold off his drum kit, replaced it with an SP-12 and started programming chopped breaks to sound like live players.

Early experiments spawned an album’s worth of material (including the beat that later became Sage Francis’s “Hell Of A Year” (from Human The Death Dance), but something wasn’t quite right;  Kurtis scrapped the album, packed his bags and set off traveling, eventually landing in the UK. He picked up work at one of London’s biggest recording studios where he went on to engineer sessions for production legends Trevor Horn and Timbaland. But the big budget pop wasn’t tapping his buttons.  He longed for grit. He longed for 12 bit.

Back to the bedroom.  To the samplers.  To the records.  To vintage gear and instruments. To music with soul.

No Passenger weaves hundreds of disparate samples, along with touches of live instrumentation, into a thoughtful and evocative tapestry.  Introspective and melancholy, yet positive and hopeful, No Passenger is the soundtrack to loneliness and isolation, and to freedom and strength.

No Passenger is released in December 2009 on independent label Root and Stem, with US distribution through Strange Famous Records.

1 – Sleep-free
2 – When The Dust Settles
3 – Kent St
4 – More Soul
5 – The Lost Man
