My Tour Dates/Watch Yourself Asher

This is the basic run down of my pre release promo tour. I got the idea of fan poaching with promo stickers/ a cd with one track not on my album rapping outside venues of other artists and it grew on me. I love the idea of it. I talked to Scroobius after hearing he had used similar tactics and he said it worked out really well for him so all that dates that say fan poaching street show are just going to be me doing my set in front of venues with a boom box handing out my promo stickers and info. Also, I will be playing a few actuall shows. Maybe a few more at places I haven’t heard back from yet. I’m too busy to be booking so I thought I’d make the best of it and roll this way til I get a manager or some shit. bookings not my thing.

That said, This entire promo trip is contigent on August 6th. The Jump off point. My friend has an extra ticket for the Asher Roth show in Phillie at the Electric Factory. My plan is to go in and nail him with a Curtis Plum promo cd during his set, not with a case, just a cd buy itself or maybe in a paper sleeve to just graze him on the head and throw him off while he’s rapping, I don’t think I’ll even have to connect to make him fuck up. I have been practicing my cd throwing technique for weeks and I’m super accurate at 15 to 20 feet. Its sort of a metaphor inacted in real life for what all dope hip hop will always do to mainstream watered down bullshit. So if they arrest me on an assualt charge the rest of the tour won’t happen but it will be worth it, I’ve done plenty of time so I’m not stressin, its a win win situation. This is a personal vendetta. I was planning on doing it anyway and I’ve been networking with people I know to do the same thing if there is an Asher Roth show in their area or if they see him at a club or whatever. I just thought it would be a good way to start off my tour. Its kind of a movement I’m trying to get going called the Everyone Nail Asher Roth With An Indie Hip Hop CD Movement. Its something I really believe in and hope others will too. This tour isn’t about me, its about making the world better for everyone by throwing cds at Asher Roth in public when he is trying to look cool.

Initially my trip back east was to visit some old friends and hit Asher Roth with a cd on stage but then I figured I might as well book a few shows and do some promo stuff while seeing the sights and taking it all in. Oh, just joking about the Asher Roth thing, I’m sure hes a really cool guy. I would never do that…….or would I?

Musical Expression and Healing

I remember in my college english 101 class our teacher warned us not to share anything too traumatic when we wrote about ourselves. I can see his point. When you meet someone new the first thing you wanna say probably shouldn’t be “Hi, I used to be a heroine addict,” especially if your trying to get a job. On the other hand, as many psychiatrists know, music and art can be powerful tools for healing. I respect emcees who can take dark subject matter from their lives and express it in a way that helps others deal with difficult psychological issues. I hear people often say my songs all sound upbeat and fun so the other day I decided to break new ground with my self and share something I went through that was very tragic and difficult to deal with. So I recorded this new song and while I was writing it I went through anger, guilt, shame, and just about every other human emotion. I posted it up on my myspace page today. The song is called ‘Lil Wayne Tried to Rape Me.’ Now is the time to let the world know what I’ve been through and let the healing begin.

My trip to Southby or Meeting Sage Francis

My buddy Lija lives down in Austin and a while back he hit me with an email inviting me to come down for Southby. Seeing as the StrangeFamous show was goin on I thought it sounded like a good idea, plus theres a bunch of Boise heads in Austin, and I hadn’t met anyone from StrangeFamous yet except Sleep. Naturally I figured it would be cool to go shake some hands. But I had to go handle some stuff back in Boise first. Alot of things in my life have been sorta up in the air lately, and It started lookin like I wouldn’t be able to make the trip. I put it out of my mind and got back to playing online chess and constructing model airplanes. Anyway, a few days before the show I came up on some skrilla and realized I could just make it on the greyhound bus. So I did the two and a half day greyhound trip from Boise to Austin. Got my stuff jacked in Denver during a layover and finally made it into Austin around midnight before the show the next day. Initially I thought it would be cool to buy a ticket to the show and surprise Sage but then I got jacked, so I emailed B. Dolan and they hooked it up so I could get in. My homeboy Nick told me Southby was off the hook. I had never heard about it until he related some stories to me dealing with him and his cousin Cody Lightning(of Walker Texas Ranger) and their adventures during the music/film fest. Wandering through the blocked off streets of downtown Austin the next day I realized that Nick’s stories were probably more than just stories. There was a damn good chance the events Nick claimed had taken place in Austin were actually based on viable facts. 6th street, Migas stands, door guys at Emos taking bribes, grackles chirping in the bushes, and Texas heat. All the elements were there. So I got to the Scoot Inn, met Sage, mingled a bit with Scroobius, and got an orange juice. I was still pretty out of it from the long ass greyhound ride. Everything looked in order. It was a dope venue. I paced around and smoked and meditated on playing online chess and constructing model airplanes. Then Sage came up and said, “Curtis, you wanna help me out with something?”. “Yeah, whats up?” I said. I followed him into this little area in the back of the stage. We went through this door and he said “These guys should be showing up any minute. We just gotta clear the area before the show.” I didn’t really know what he meant but I was down to help out however I could. Then he pushed this table aside and opened up a trapdoor. I followed him down into this murky concrete chamber beneath the venue. “Any minute now. This connects to all the underground infrastructure in the city of Austin,” he said. All the sudden I caught a wiff in the air and got nauseous. It smelled like a crackhouse full of rotten macaroni. Next thing I knew Sage handed me a bunch of StrangeFamous vinyl and told me to pull them out of the sleeves and toss them at anything that made a move, but before he could finish we were surrounded. Everywhere I looked there were vicious filthy bloodsucking vampires, the sons of Dracule. Sage tossed a B. Dolan vinyl at one with lightning speed and I watched as it burst into flames. I took his cue and pulled an SFR T-shirt over one of their heads, then beat the shit out of it Hockey style while it melted into goo. We must of taken out 40 or 50 of those evil motherfuckers. So we finished up and headed back up to the show. Later on Sage explained to me that the undead monsters we made quick work of had actually been promotional reps for Kanye West trying to get him a spot at the show that night. Anyway, seeing everyone rock it was well worth 2 and half days on a greyhound and getting jacked in Denver. Big Props to everyone who played. Sleep gets the gold star for killing it even though he lost his voice. I’ve never seen or heard anything like that.

Street Rapping

I’ve been a street rapper for years. When I say street rapper, I don’t mean I’m from the streets and I’m all thugged out, I was raised on a farm. What I mean is I street perform for cash by rapping. I got into it when I was homeless so I could make money to buy sandwiches. I was gonna be freestyling all day anyway so I figured I might as well do it in a busy area with a donation box in front of me.

The spot I picked was on 8th and Idaho in Boise in front of this big corporate banking firm type place. The second day I went out I sold a couple cds to some skater kids for sandwich money. About 15 minutes later a cop rolled up and gave me a ticket for illegal vending. Someone inside must have saw me and called him because they didn’t want me street rapping in front of their big fancy corporation. I didn’t have cds laid out or a booth or anything. I was just slangin em out of my backpack. I wound up with a fine for 800 dollars. The cop said I could take donations but that it was illegal to sell cds. So out of spite, I went back to that spot and street rapped 3 or 4 times a week for what must have been about 5 months all day during business hours. I met alot of cool people, pissed alot of people off, and ate alot of sandwiches. The funniest part was when idaho gangster rappers would try to battle me.

What kind of society do we live in when all kinds of harmful things are legal to sell but a guy can’t sell a rap song for a sandwich?

I’m out in Portland for awhile and its a pretty good place to street rap. I went out the other day and scored 28 bucks. The rain sucks but I like it when its overcast becuase I sunburn easily.

If your an emcee interested in making money for sandwiches while rapping or you just want to street rap for fun, there are a few approaches you can take. If you wanna go big so people can hear you a block away, I suggest buying a Roland Micro Cube. They kick out alot of a good amount of bass. However, if your on the street rapping with out a microphone when no one is there you look insane. Plus if your a homeless emcee rapping for sandwich money you probably can’t afford a mini amp from guitar center. For the more casual approach, I suggest rapping with no mic and a cool lookin boom box. It makes you almost blend in like your some guy rappin along to Lil Jon because he has nothing better to do.

When I first got into street rapping I was trying to slang cds so I just did my set over and over again but whats really fun is freestyling. I like to freestyle and if some one ask me to do a written song I’ll bust one out or maybe just freestyle and do a written song once in awhile. I started out freestyling over Doom instrumentals but then after awhile I got into freestyling over nothing but drum machine beats. It has a raw feel that reminds me of freestyling over someone beat boxing.

If your in the portland area maybe you’ll catch me street rapping down around Pioneer square. I’ll be the guy who sounds like Katherine Hepburn.

Hip Hop the Musical!!!

I’ve always been a big fan of two things; the Highschool the Musical movies and hardcore rap music. So I kind of got this idea today, though it was sort of suggested by someone else, to combine my two greatest loves into a musical comedy about rappers and all the whacky trouble they get into. This is a great idea. I’m telling you, The Game is gonna be doing musical comedy next year. Who would have thought Ice Cube would have ever gotten into making heartwarming Disney movies when he first came out. Gotta strike while the iron is hot baby! Get on it before its too late.
