Sage Francis Bio

"All great truths begin as blasphemies," proclaimed the fiery playwright George Bernard Shaw. It's a sentiment that can be applied exponentially to the works of rapper Sage Francis and his exhilarating new album Li(f)e. Francis has never been afraid to provoke. As a result he is a sometimes polarizing and increasingly important figure in modern music. Adored by many, reviled by a few but never ignored and always essential, Sage Francis has emerged as the reigning agent provocateur of hip hop. Read more

“The Best of Times” with Amelie composer Yann Tiersen

The much anticipated new release Li(f)e by Sage Francis features more than a few inspired musical collaborations. Yet none of them so seemingly unexpected and ultimately transcendent as the pairing on the track “Best Of Times” featuring the music of noted French composer Yann Tiersen. An intensely inventive classically based multi instrumentalist, Tiersen is perhaps best known for creating the powerfully evocative soundtrack to the beloved 2001 French film “Amélie.”

On the song “Best Of Times,” what begins as simple atmospheric accompaniment, gradually builds into an epic crescendo, providing an absolutely perfect musical score for Francis’ increasingly powerful confessional narrative. As unorthodox a partnership as it might initially appear, the collaboration is by no means a novelty. Sage Francis was well aware of Yann Tiersen before the making of Li(f)e.

“I sought out Yann’s soundtrack for ‘Amelie’ immediately after first seeing the film,” Francis explains. “I would play the main song from it on piano from time to time. And when I received the music from him it just felt so heavy to me, so incredibly epic that I knew I had to make the most of it. I didn’t know what to do and then I stumbled upon this letter that I had written to my girlfriend a few years ago explaining where I was in life and what she meant to me and what I was hoping to accomplish. The very first line of that letter ended up being the first line of the song. And when I put that down, it just sparked all these intense childhood memories. The song ended up being my own little movie with words.”

I’m sure that you have heard this enough times already but I just can’t wait for the album to come out. From the way you talk about it… it seems the album will be anything short of amazing. Now post the first song already so I can download the crap out of it. I’m hoping it will be enough to tide me over till the albums release because as catchy as the hook is… “Like Burt Renoylds” ain’t cutting anymore.

In France, we are so proud you work together !

  3. Alex says:

Well, I’m french, and i’m not that proud… Plus Amélie is the worst film ever… But, what he did with shannon Wright was not bad, so…

Sage this has been one of the best and most significant tracks I have heard in years. The Best of Times sums up so much for so many people.
First heard it on Radio 1 in the UK on Zane Lowes show. Blew me away. Totally looking forward to the new album in May.
Hope you come to the UK soon to tour. All the best,
