Nano machines scare the crap out of me  Reply with quote

Has anyone read the book "Prey" by Michael Crichton?

In this book he tells a story of the overtaking of mankind by tiny atomic level intelligent robot like cells called nicknamed "nano machines".

These nano entities (1/100000 the size of a human hair) can combine together to perform tasks and specific processes such as eradicating tumors , removing cholestoral in the body and forming any type of intelligent matter like paint that repairs itself and blades that re-sharpen.

From what I understand this type of thing is on the horizon in the real world and currently be developed. I view this kind of technology as even more dangerous than genetic manipulation.

Nanomachines are neat, and its not just a nickname. The name comes from the size, i think they are about 1 nanometer, and they are a machine.

I dont know why it would scare you so much, just because you are reading the book probably. its not like anyone is gonna assault you with some nanomachines in your lifetime.

Think about how unstable this technology can potentially become, little objects that asemble themselves into seemingly anything capable of anything.

Not to mention how esoteric the players in the nano machine world would become. Anyone without super powerful & expensive microscopes would not even know they exist.

I was watching a special on the Dicovery Channel a few weeks that talked about this. They do have machines that do shit like that, but they are all about the size of a softball right now.... or so they would have us believe.

George Bush is actually a dead guy who's life-like appearance (including the rapid aging he's experienced in his first term in office) is maintained by a bunch of little machines that control his carcass.

actually, i have read that book. seeing them things looking like little tornadoes floating around the desert would make a great movie. shit had me scared as fuck when they had to go down into the little valley thing and find the 'hives' or whatever they were in that cave.

don't think you'll have to worry too much about these things though, tehcnology like what you're talking about is a bit down the road. especially the kind that 'learns' like in the book.

great book though. right down my alley.

You guys watch stargate sg-1 series? they have nanomachines and all they do is replicate themselves and take over the universe.

HAHA!!

My friend studies nanotechnology at University. I don't think you should be scared.

If anything they will help a cure for diabetes or some shit like that.

hm.. i'd definitely worry.. a nanotechnology fuck up is one of the more likely ways the world could end..

scientists can do crazy shit..
like grow black holes in labs.. play around with neuro-computers.. biologically engineer fish to radiate an all-organic, police intensity, pulsing red light that fisherman will be able to see from 100 yards away.. develop injections (MC-18) that are synthesized derivatives of ibogaine, and get rid of junkies withdrawal symptoms and end their cravings (no more addictions).. produce synthetic spider silk.. test weapons that are stronger than nuclear bombs.. etc..

i'd worry about all of tomorrow's science.

nanotechnology is definitely a risk. and from what i understand, it's a risk worth taking, but i am no expert. with every chance one takes, there is a potential threat or danger. hence the name risk.

so there is something to worry about, but you can't get anywhere if you don't take risks.
