Good work, Neuro.

To be fair, Sage did "retire" from prolonged nationwide tours. Not music. Not producing new records. Not touring. Not doing shows all over the nation and even the world. He just retired from living out of his Prius for 4 month stints.

You know what I wonder about? How guest spots on records work. When the spots are between label mates, is it pro bono on some greater good shit? Same with between friends? Is a contract worked about between labels, or is the artist considered a separate entity when not releasing a record? Is it an individual thing, like buddies getting together and helping build a garage? Is it callous and sterile, like one verse equals $1000 or something? These things run through my mind all day. ALL DAY.

I can only speak on our circle, but I've never heard of anyone charging money for verses. It's almost always pro bono. Sometimes it's done with a promise of getting a verse or a beat in return.

i feel that.
i've never charged for a verse. kinda.
there was one time some friends on a major demanded that i charged something.
they knew they were not going to recoup, so they went for as much up front as possible.
in the process, they made sure to fill some of their friends' pockets as well.
i kept the price humble enough though.

other than that i've never charged for a verse.
but i rarely ever get on songs with people who aren't my friends.

maybe someday i will regret not selling verses to strangers on myspace. doubtful, but you never know.

That seems the best way to go. One thing ive learned the hard way is you don't mix money w friends. It can make things really weird. Same thing w family. There's nothing like the shame of pistol whipping your grandma in front of the block, but you know....gotta keep it real if she don't have your money.

Of course I'm kidding about gm.

That's talking more on this end of the spectrum though, right; it's surely not always gonna be like that.

I gotta believe that when some pop act gets Busta Rhymes to come shout in a funny voice for 8 bars to lend them some credibility on their lead single he's getting PAID for that shit.

Yeah. And at that level people are usually getting royalty points, so it's not so much what you get paid up front, it's the percentage you make off of the song in the long run.

Ludacris must be doing well. He's on every song on the radio these past few years. Justin Beiber, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Flo Rida, T.I., T-Pain, etc. etc.

I mean honestly he's like a verse-whore.
