I was at the show and found the tupac hologram to be awesome - as did everyone else in the crowd considering how hyped people got. that said, my critical capacities were at an all time low. in retrospect, my feelings are that if the family is good with it, and if it's done respectfully (as I think it was) then who cares.

also: how good of a call was it to have him materialize to "Hail Mary"!

also: props to Dre for paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to invent some new technology, as apparently this was not a true "hologram" but instead CGI that was then projected in 3D using crazy mirror and light effects.

We're entering a realm where an artist isn't just a commodity but they're ONLY a commodity. Yay.

surely no-one would ever pay to see a 'show' of a hologram(?) it's a gimmick which worked quite well for one off songs but even that small dose got tired quickly.

She is cute, stylish and has had a number one chart-topping single.

But Japan’s newest and biggest pop star differs from most of her peers in one crucial aspect: she is a hologram.

Hatsune Miku has taken the music scene by storm in her native Japan where her concerts are always sold out and are full of screaming, adoring fans.

i stand corrected.
though any comment on technology i ever make should come with a caveat of 'except in Japan'.
they have EVERYTHING.

Yeah but Tupac entered that realm almost out the gate. I don't think it's a threat to artists like us or anyone we know.

If you sell your music/use it to pay your bills, your music is a commodity. This is not a denigration of underground rappers, or anything. It's simply facts on facts on facts, man. To avoid the commodification of music, you must give your music away for free. Everything is a commodity in this system. Even people are. So, Jedi Tupac is not surprising whatsoever.

Next thing you'll be seeing is Ronald Reagan holograms at Republican National Conventions with looped speeches and recordings playing over the speakers.

Haha yeah it's like when people cheer in a movie theatre and it's not the premiere or some festival showing where people involved are actually present. Contain yourself!

Freddie Mercury is back!

Freddie Mercury 'to appear' in Queen show
Freddie Mercury Brian May said Freddie Mercury would 'appear' on stage using a technical 'effect'

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed that Freddie Mercury will "appear" on stage during a special performance of West End musical We Will Rock You.

He told the BBC that the production team had been working on ways to give the late singer a presence during its 10th anniversary show for some time.

May stressed the new "effect" was not a hologram, calling it "an optical illusion of sorts".

"People will come out saying, 'did we actually see Freddie?'" he added.

The guitarist hinted the musical might employ a similar technique to the one used to make the late rapper Tupac Shakur perform on stage at the Coachella music festival last month.

"It's a little unfortunate they did that thing with Tupac as we've been trying to make Freddie appear on the stage for quite a while," he said.

"[That technique] is something we've looked at ourselves but I think probably for a show that runs eight shows a week it's not really quite practical."

The special performance, on 14 May, will celebrate 10 years of the hit musical at London's Dominion Theatre.

As well as almost all the original London cast in attendance, Hollywood star Robert De Niro - who is one of the show's producers - will also be making an appearance.

"There is a certain person who's coming that's intimately associated with getting the production on in the first place - our friend Bob from Los Angeles," May confirmed.

"We call him Bob so we don't get too overcome with his stardom."
