I'm currently located in Baton Rouge and can show you some gems here. LSU's campus by itself can give you a good half a day of exploring. There's a tiger with a multimillion dollar habitat right next to death valley(one of the most famous college football venues). There's also the food, one of the best things about my migration to the South was Cajun cuisine.

There's actually no games going on in June & July because school's out for the summer at that point.

You want to celebrate the day your country was deemed to be unnecessary to us? And don't worry, there will be fireworks, along with a national headlining band playing a free show. 2 years ago when I went it was B-52's. I think John Legend played it once too. Parking and even public transportation for this event is a bitch though.

When I was there a few years ago, the vast majority of people there were taking it seriously. But I'm sure they're happy to have whoever wants to pay $25 come through. (Plus they have armed guards throughout.)

I loved it. Definitely want to go back.

ha! yeah, definitely! we've celebrated 3 independence days over there, and each time, that thought has crossed my mind :) we wave flags and all that shit, so most of the time, it's been fine. i did try to hide my accent in the parking lot at the rose bowl last time though.

oh, and so, are there no sporting events in june/july worth checking out? i'm not too fussed either way, but that type of thing is one of the only stereotypical 'american' pastimes we've not done yet.

The most likely professional event for you to check out would be a baseball game. The easiest place for that would be St. Louis. Depending on the dates of your trip you might be able to work something out. Worth looking into.

Minor league baseball is usually a good time too. Cheap tickets, all the same food and beer, plus you can sit much closer to the game.

Yeah, St. Louis is a HUGE baseball town. So expect it to be fun but not cheap. Memphis also is the home of St. Louis's top minor league team. I've never been to a minor league game but would like to.

thanks for the tips! though, st louis and memphis both have away games while we're there, so that sucks. but i'm going to look into the other cities.. major/minor league makes no difference to me as i don't understand it at all, but it sounds fun at least :)

got the route pretty much mapped out now, with the only place we're not sure about the specifics of being minneapolis. fifth element is on my list, and it's gay pride the weekend we're there, but apart from that, open to suggestions if anyone has any (including nice places to stay)..
