J-Zone's "Root for the Villain" = a great read  Reply with quote

http://tinyurl.com/RootForTheVillain

"Root for the Villain" is a self-published book, 198 pages in length, written by one of indie-hop's most interesting, hilarious and polarizing characters; J-Zone. Each book comes SIGNED by J-Zone along with a handwritten quote and a J-Zone CD of his choice.

Many people I came up with in hiphop tinkered with the idea of releasing a proper book. It's kind of crazy to me that J-Zone is the one who finally got it done, and I'm so glad he did. He is smart, funny, weird, and most importantly INTERESTING. I dare say this book is Bukowski-ish. Not in writing style but in spirit. In his own words:

"I was on the hip-hop come-up, then I came down - hard. Splat. Some critical success, incessant praise from pop stars and hip-hop legends alike, and then...abysmal commercial failure. I did tours on Greyhound buses filled with wide-bodied, Jheri curled women and knife-wielding gang members. I witnessed my life-long passion for music dissolve in 12 hours and my final album sell a whopping 47 copies in its first month for sale. I left my little-known spot in a small, niche quadrant of the hip-hop world and joined my fellow overqualified stiffs with useless college degrees in the world of dead end jobs. For some sick reason, I find all of the above hilarious and have made an omelette out of any egg that wound up on my face. I pin my cross-hairs on everyday bullsh*t just as accurately as I do the dysfunctional ways of the music biz."

This book explores in detail:
1. A musical journey.
2. An ode to a hip-hop vixen.
3. The impact of forgotten rap albums.
4. Diggin' in the crates and cassette tape appreciation.
5. What happens when rappers get day jobs? (The plight of Generation "X").
6. What is a Gadget Ho?
7. A funny, honest, and self-deprecating look at the life of a struggling musician.
8. A playground for adults. Who would've thought?
9. If you try to figure out the opposite sex, you've already lost...
10. Are men the new women (What the fuck)?
11. You're not a New Yorker. You bought "Empire State of Mind" on iTunes and live in an old Brooklyn factory.
12. I live with my grandmother and she farts a lot...
13. The war on bullshit begins! Root for the Villain.

We are carrying the book. The product page was linked in the first post.

"Root for the Villain" is the featured item on our homepage this week actually. The book comes signed and we also include a J-Zone CD with each purchase. All info here:

I far more enjoy his writing than his music. Will (probably) read.

I have never heard of him, but that excerpt sounds nice. One to keep in mind.

Some of my favorite J-Zone tracks:

Peep the switchup at 1:17

Hilarious and dope on the mic.

His Jimi Hendrix remix album is top notch:

it's my birthday next week and this is on my wishlist.. anyone: feel free to buy it for me. otherwise, i'll get it myself for christmas.

even though i never really checked for him after 'pimps don't pay taxes' (which, after reading that book blurb, makes me feel slightly guilty), i've always got time for a bit of j-zone.. i've still got a copy of 'music for tu madre' somewhere. but, the writer j-zone has taken over from the rapper/producer j-zone for me.
