I've been to 10 european countries and the only people I've seen get a tip are maids/housekeepers in Spain and Portugal. |

If my tattooist is anything to go by - He remembered me even though he hadn't seen me for 7 years, but was very appreciative of a tip and didn't seem to be expecting one at all. |

I mostly skimmed this thread.
I always tip 20%. Even to bad service. I'd feel guilty otherwise and I am a regular at a lot of places and I really want people to like me.
But seriously, fuck servers. Fuck them all. I've worked in a lot of restaurants, dishwashing and cooking. Busting my ass twice as hard for half the pay all the while getting treated like shit by those servers that are being martyred in this thread.
Oh let me stop everything I'm doing so I can wash some silverware so you can make it to that party. Nah, it's cool. I don't mind being here till 1am. Really. Oh, cool, you made 200 bucks tonight? Awesome, I made 50, worked longer and I'm covered in regurgitated food. Sweet, dude.
Fuck servers. Self centered picks.
Why do they deserve 20 bucks for walking back and forth a few times? Just because a couple ordered steaks.
Oh, and yes, I understand some restaraunts have servers tip out the kitchen staff and stuff like that. Fuck you. Not all of them as was my experience at more than a few popular restaurants.

i hope people can see how crazy this is. like, i knew to tip for a tattoo.. but only because i had a friend with me who told me "youre supposed to tip for tattoos you know."
had i walked in there alone, id have been a piece of shit. due to an unwritten, unspoken, nebulous rule. this is why the whole idea gives me anxiety.
for all i know, i could have failed to tip 20 people i was supposed to tip on any given day. they could all be forming a posse right now to come and kill me. fucking hell. |

Can't stand tipping. Makes me uncomfortable as shit. i make their days pay in 2 hours work back home, and i'm just a shitkicker in a menial job. Makes it harder to budget on your holiday too. How much money do i need for today? Ehhhhhhh
I remember taking a cab across town and back in Tuscaloosa, and at the end just giving him a handful of notes, a bunch of dollar bills and a 5 it was seriously fuck all ....this poor guy completely lost his shit and was about to name his firstborn son after me or something. Its got this almost fucking mock imperial -Lord Royality Rewards the Natives'- creepy vibe to it.
The absolute worst is drinking in america at bars (SOoooooooooooo unbelievably cheap) and then have this horrible soulcrushing realisation i've bought 15 rounds and only tipped for 4 for them and now the staff must have put rat poison in my drink. So i try and remember who served me and give them extra and then they think i'm creepy. |

I usually tip at least 15% but I don't think I should have to.
Fuck that mentality. Don't be a waiter/waitress if you don't like relying on tips. There are plenty of other shitty jobs where you can get paid minimum wage at. Don't work for a corporation that pays you under minimum wage.
Also, quit having babies. And they took our jobs. |

Tipping tattoo artists is definitely a weird thing. I think it stems from the fact that most artists have to pay for their cubby space on a monthly basis, and only get paid if they make more than the rent. They also have a percentage kicked back to the shop owner. Obviously this varies from place to place, but the point is that they have costs to clear before they actually make a profit, so tipping them helps them out quite a bit. I don't know what the appropriate percentage is either. It just seems a little crazy to pay $350 for a piece and then lay out an extra $60-70. |

What about for a haircut? I just tip $20 on a haircut. Don't have any tattoos so I don't know how that works. Do you tip the maid at a hotel? The guy that dries your car at a car wash? Do you tip the DJ? I go to a bar that has karaoke once a week and people tip the guy with the lap top playing the instrumentals.
In vegas, if you hit a jackpot on video poker or video keno, you are expected to tip out your bartender, even if you are just drinking waters. Same for cocktail waitresses and dealers when you win at a table. And I guess people tip the guy that pays out their win at the sportsbook.
Strange custom.
I tipped a bartender 10 euros in Paris and she almost had a heart attack. |

i definitely understand this state of mind too,not always though, but mainly for the more "upper class" restaurants, servers dont do jack shit really, sure it can get busy, and dealing with snobby people can be work sometimes, but they do the least out of everyone , alot of bitching and complaining about others, now there are some servers that go beyond and help the other staff too but its usually only a few |

You don't to have be rich to be classy. It means having manners. Don't get the terms twisted just because they have the same root word. Also, most waiters I know are also good tippers (even when they are on tough times).
We are not going to change the system, whether you like how it is set up or not. Our culture has created this as a social norm and its only archaic when it isn't used any more (which it is). So, being a cheap-ass as a form of protest is something I'm not buying.
For anti-tip-system folks, here are some things to think about. Restaurants do not operate on a huge profit margin. To pay the employees 20% more (or in LA from $2.13 to whatever), that cost is going to be added to the food (now with extra tax). And now the employee has no cause to "go the extra mile" because they get the same wage regardless. For me, I go to a restaurant because I don't feel like cooking that night and I enjoy the atmosphere and the service. If you take away the service, it will really motivate me to just cook that night instead. In summation, if Im gonna pay the same additional 20%, I'd rather the incentive element be in place. |
