I just watched Silent House with the gf. First off, if you got queasy or complained about the camera work in Blair Witch or Cloverfield, move on. This was shot to imply one continuous take and unfolds in real time, which is really novel and fresh (even though Hitchcock did something similar decades ago). So you have something like a documentary occurring primarily in a house, in which some creepy shit is going down. Aaand there's a neat little twist, which may or may not be predictable to you depending on how much attention you pay. From the reviews I've read people either seem to really enjoy or really hate this film. One amateur critic even felt compelled to write that the filmmakers were "worse thsn Hitler," which is clearly hyberlole. They are incredibly wrong. Check this out. |

Yeah Hitchcock did it with Rope but it was like watching play for the most part because it was only set in two rooms. I haven't seen it but from what my friends have told me is that the movie is ok/fine but it gets so much hate because its nothing like Silent Hill except the name. |

Why does everyone get this movie confused with Silent Hill? Silent House is clearly a dual metaphor for both the impetus and conclusion of the movie. The more I think about the latter movie, the more I like it. Even the fact that I'm still playing through it in my mind today is a sign of its quality. Also, in many ways this movie had me thinking of The Strangers up until about the midway point. Then it became clear what was really happening. Finally, Elizabeth Olsen was phenomenal in her role, which is to say she carried the film (by design) like a pro. |

You aren't scared to do that in Germany? I know two people who received letters asking for money due to illegal downloading. And I thought I once read that Germany was the 2nd highest prosecuting country in regards to that. |

SPOILERS FOR THE TOTAL RECALL REAMAKE
I saw Total Recall (the remake) last night, it's ok just like the Arnold version but in a different way. It's kinda weird reading the reviews for this thing. Many of them are calling it a close remake of the 1990 version without the weirdness and one-liners + they don't go to Mars. How is that a close remake -_-?
Also rewatched Crimson Tide and it's still great. Submarine films maybe my fav. war sub-genre. |

Total Recall blew. It took all the fun out of the movie and replaced it with awful action scenes.
No aliens, no cool creatures, just robot swat teams and a really hot 3-titted chick for 5 seconds. Save your money, google the still image. |

I liked Total Recall a lot. I also think the first one has aged really badly. |

What do you what out of a remake?
I personally hate when they are basically version 2.0
and let's not kid ourselves, the action in the 1990 version was Three Stooges level at points.

From what I heard that new "Total Recall" movie isn't really a remake at all. Isn't it supposed to be a movie adaptation of "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale", but with the "Total Recall" title because that one sounds better and people are familiar with it... The Philip K. Dick book that both Total Recalls were "based on" apparently didn't take place on Mars at all, so the new one isn't remaking the old movie, it's just another adaptation but with the same title... ? |

All that shit is irrelevant, it was a bad action movie by today's standards. It wasn't actiony enough to stand alone on that, it wasn't funny, it wasn't deep or thought provoking, it was just cookie cutter, poorly put together not quite a blockbuster movie that tried to coast on its stars.
Maybe Arnold's star power was just big enough to carry the original or maybe if I was younger I'd feel the same way about this movie, but I doubt it because nothing about it stood out. I saw it 3 weeks ago and I can barely remember any of it right now, it wasn't memorable at all. |

My experience was very different. The movie did a very good job of encouraging the audience to question whether or not the things we saw playing out on screen were actually happening. Colin Farrell's surprise at his own combat skills worked well into that. A more credible action star could not have delivered such credible skepticism about his own capabilities and history. An ordinary man struggling with whether or not he believes his own gradually discovered mythology.
We got a squalid, dystopian future with a thoughtful narrative on what we can trust when we no longer believe our own memories. I thought the futuristic technology effects were eerie without being unbelievable. The cellphone implant in particular was awesome, and compressed a lot of ambivalence about the subject into a relatively short on-screen sequence.
In short: I liked the script. I liked the acting. I liked the visuals. The film packed in enough of what Rudy Rucker likes to call "eyeball kicks" to satisfy my expectations for a Dick adaptation and for a film titled "Total Recall." It won't be one of my favorite films for the year but I think it accomplished almost everything it set out to accomplish and I think that it's a film that science fiction and action fans can easily enjoy if they approach it with the right frame of mind. |
