The only one that comes immediately to mind is Quiet Earth, a little film from Down Under about the apocalypse.

While I was typing that I also thought of Flight of the Navigator, which is the quintessential adolescent sci-fi adventure.

how could I forget about Dark city and The Thing!!! The Thing is probably one of my fav movies of all time...its one of those movies I can watch over and over agian and it stays fresh. If you wanna watch a good sci-fi flick, although its not made in the 80's or 90's, watch Moon.

ive got la jetee (1962) in my netflix instant queue waiting to be watched. it sounds like an interesting concept with a plot that sounds perfect for me.

summary:
In a devastated Paris in the aftermath of WWIII, The few surviving humans begin researching time travel, hoping to send someone back to the pre-war world for food, supplies and maybe a solution to their dire position. One man is haunted by a vague childhood memory that will prove fateful.

it is made of still images and at only 28 min. it shouldnt overwhelm you

Anything Cronenburg or Carpenter Sci-Fi from the 80s is tops. James Cameron and Ridley Scott too, really.

I second A Boy and His Dog as well.

Videodrome (only cause it's my username):

Oh Shieeeeeett...

I watched videodrome last night and it was very cool...
I've watched "they live" and "alien", not "dark star" though.

And yes "Dark City" is amazing but doesnt have the mystery of the 80's...

I haven't seen a lot of these, but the ones I have seen I've really enjoyed. Gonna be saving this list.
