| Awesome things you've only done once and will never do again |
|

This is kinda inspired by the drunk guy/shark thread. The first thing that came to mind for me is:
Seeing Michael Jordan play live.
Let's hear it. Remember, you've done it just once and you have to know that you'll never do it again. (Let's keep it to unique things... no "graduating high school" answers. You jokers.) |

Salvia and tossing a salad; they were both an experience, but not for me

On an independent study field trip in 1993 or so, I got to play with then-current VR gloves and goggles in the University of Minnesota's Human Factors Research Lab. I remember having a distinct impression of my ears, skin, and feet being in one place while the rest of me was physically somewhere else. I've never gotten that sensation back in any modern media experience. |

VR == virtual reality.
Staff working in the lab put me in a piece of headgear that weighed several pounds and went on the head to cover the eyes. Each eye saw an independent video screen, and the two video screens were stereoscopically calibrated to give the visual sense of a three dimensional space. No peripheral vision back into the rest of the room, but the screens were big enough to give a pretty good sense of peripheral vision anyway -- not quite full range but not pure tunnel vision either. Each eye probably had about 90 degrees of viewing, and IIRC they overlapped to give something like 120 degrees total.
My hands went into big clunky wired gloves that used instrumentation tracking the 3D movement of my hands and fingers to give me a way to physically interact with that virtual three dimensional space. I could reach out, see my hand move around, and push objects around. No sense of touch or even resistance, but a real sense of being in that digital place.
I was only in the system for a couple of minutes but when I got up I was physically dizzy and motion sick for a few seconds. This was a common enough thing that the staff warned me not to try to walk too far after standing up.
The image fidelity was a great deal poorer than even something like Minecraft today, but the experience was still incredibly vivid and real-feeling.
3D movies don't feel like that. Video games don't feel like that. Flight simulators, immersive arcade games, etc -- none of it feels like that. |

Scuba diving. It was freaking cool being under water and seeing all kinds of things humans weren't meant to be around. But it totally fucked up my left ear and now I can't hear as well. |
