am i an asshole for thinking this is an empty gesture? its just like veteran's day, mothers day, valentines day, kids with cancer etc.... they are people your supposed to support anyway. but if you are that concerned do something that actually helps like become a social worker, donate money, write to politicians. this is just like any fad that will last for a couple weeks then fade away without anything really changing at all. |

yeah, this seems more like an effort to bring the topic into conversation than offering any tangible assistance to victims of violence.
as far as groups offering tangible assistance to victims of violence goes, my wife just received a letter from the Partnership of Violence Prevention, a local anti-violence non-profit, that says that they will be closing their doors at the end of the year due to funding issues. here is a group that has been operating for over a decade, providing support and education to the victims of violence and the community that is forced to end their mission because of financial problems. sad. |

I'm with you, Majawala. This is just dumb. It doesn't do anything for kids at all. I'm willing to bet that thousands of people who abuse their kids have changed their profile picture. It's easily as worthless as posting your bra color to somehow spread awareness about something other than your undergarments.
The problem with shit like this is that it's completely worthless for the cause and psychologically it fills the role of donating to a real charity or other useful actions. People do stupid shit like this and then when you ask them to donate to a similar cause they feel like they've already done something, like their profile picture or their status was enough. They make a hollow gesture and then write it off as a good deed done.
It's similar to how announcing your goals gives you a sense of accomplishment that, depending on other psychological factors, can prevent you from achieving those goals. http://sivers.org/zipit |

IT's all actually been very traumatic for me. My father used to dress up as optimus prime before viciously beating me nightly. |

Given what I know about your father that is a believable story. |

there should be a movement to support people or stereotypes that society is supposed to reject. Like sluts. I'd be on board.
afterthought - or gigalo's. :) |
