^ I think you got called a prick due to the condescending "it's called reading newspapers" line...
Anyway, I have to agree with all the other folks from Europe that posted here. I can't see how exactly is it becoming more and more accepted to be racist in Europe. I watch the news/read newspapers too. I don't see it at all.

I think that tolerance peaked about 10 years ago and since 9/11 it has been getting more acceptable to be anti-Muslim/Arab.

Examples can be seen with all the "anti-immigrant" parties popping up in Europe to even here in Quebec with the ADQ. Then you have all the new anti-immigration laws being passed in the states. The wall. The rise of the ignorant (and proud of it) "Tea Partyers".

I see many examples of racism being more accepted, mostly under the guise of immigration issues.

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn Firefly's comment about it being easier to be racist in Europe. While I wouldn't quite word it that way, the far right parties in multiple European countries have made significant electoral gains in recent years.

http://socialistworker.org/2010/10/11/far-right-thrives-on-crisis

"In the most recent elections to the European parliament it was the ideological current that grew most, reaching 37 seats, and in various elections from 2009 onwards, it has continued to grow:

* in the Hungarian elections, the far right and anti-Semitic party Jobbik scored 17 percent of the vote;

* in France, the FN has managed to recover electorally after the setback of the 2007 parliamentary elections, when it dropped to 4.3 percent, scoring 11.6 percent in the latest regional elections;

* in Austria, the Freedom Party won 16 percent in the presidential elections, becoming the second biggest electoral force;

* the Northern League was the most popular party electorally in the north of Italy in the last regional and municipal elections, with 2.7 million votes;

* in the Netherlands, the Party of Freedom has consolidated its good electoral results from the European elections, reaching 17 percent of the vote in the parliamentary elections and increasing its parliamentary representation from 9 to 24 members, becoming the third-largest force in Parliament;

* and in the last parliamentary elections, the far right Vlaams Belang obtained 12.5 percent of the vote in Flanders."

Racism is a tad bit more tolerated in Europe. By a "tad" I mean a lot.

Compared to the U.S.? I don't see it. And I'm not even trying to defend Europe in any way...as it may appear in this thread. I just don't see it. I've seen much more blatant racism in the U.S. than I have in Europe. And I come from California, which would seem to be a rather tolerant state.

I would have to disagree with this. I am from North Carolina and have spent a year living in both austria and germany. In my experience it was definitely much more acceptable to make blatently racist comments in polite company over there. and I'm from the south.

This isn't to say that europeans/americans are more/less racist, simply that overt racism is less taboo in europe.

Haha ok. I guess so. I will never defend the French.
