So I dunno how big of news this is over there but it is pretty wild over here.
The supporters of the fugitive ex prime minister have collected over 300,000 cc's of blood from their ranks and are pouring them on government buildings. Today they headed to the current Prime Ministers home (the one they want to step down) and poured their blood on the gates of his house.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8571592.stm
I woke up early to get to a spot where I could take good pictures of the caravan coming down the main road of Bangkok, Sukhumvit. I would estimate there was anywhere from 10-20,000 people, all in pick-up trucks or on motorbikes.
The first wave of motorcycles
Green Light!
The three guys in front are the organizers of all this craziness.
Apparently some American Thais were in on the action, which is strange as the protesters represent the poor farmers from the Northeast of Thailand.
Everyone had to get down from the elevated walkway (where the previous pics were taken from) so as not to be above this passing monk (a big no no)
I was amazed I got these next two pics. Those bottles being held up are full of blood given by the protesters that will soon be on the Prime Minsters doorstep!
So, it was an interesting day to say the least, I was tempted to follow them to the PM's house, but it is in a very small soi (side street) and the thought of something bad happening in such small confines was too much for me.
Not to mention it is FUCKING GROSS!!! AIDS anyone?
Yes that is a real picture.
So far it has remained completely nonviolent, but very bloody (not words you hear together often).
I will update if anything interesting/crazy(er) happens.

spilling blood that's fuckin brilliant. that's on some next level protesting. the us anti-war movement needs to step it up. so uh, I have no idea what's going on there, I've had to avoid the news lately so as not to fall into despair. Would you say this is a righteous movement, more or less? i mean what does it take on an organizing, logistical, and moral economic level to get a mass of people to donate blood, get in the streets, and spill it on the prime ministers doorstep? |

It is a long long story, but I don't really consider them good or bad. They are supporting a man that embezzled billions from his country and bought their votes. They are extremely poor farmers from the North of Thailand, and any support they can get they will take, even if it is from an extremely corrupt Politician such as Thaksin.
Most all of these people were bussed/trucked into the capital from their home provinces to stage this protest. They see the current government as only serving the elitists, which is true to an extent, so I see their beef. As long as they keep it peaceful I am all for their right to freedom of speech. The former Prime Minister, however, should be in jail IMO, and he would be put in Jail if he came back to Thailand (Shit would get UGLY then.) |

Seems Mr. Thaksin (ex PM, the guy the reds are fighting for) has seriously lost the plot...
BANGKOK: -- Thaksin said via a video conference call to the Red Shirt protesters that the government has been bribing protesters to leave the rally.
The ousted premier also claimed that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has a mental disorder similar to Adolf Hitler's.
At the Red Shirt rally at Phanfa Lilat Bridge in Bangkok, fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made another video conference call to his supporters.
Thaksin has accused the government of trying to bribe some protestors into leaving the rally and said that someone laced the protestors' water with poison.
However, the ousted premier thanked his supporters and asked them to remain patient, saying that the current government has a hearing problem.
Thaksin also talked about the yesterday's blood collection. He said that despite the disapproval of many people, the Red Shirt protesters have done the right thing in sacrificing their blood for democracy.
In his speech to the Red Shirt protesters, the fugitive former prime minister claimed that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has some psychological condition similar to Adolf Hitler's.
Thaksin added that just like the German schizophrenic dictator, Abhisit does not like to talk alone, has problems controlling his ambitions, and violent tendencies.
Thaksin also said that Abhisit is surrounded by homosexuals with emotional problems.
Toward the end of this call, Thaksin thanked his supporters again and urged them to continue their fight against the government for the sake of the younger generations.
However, he warned the protesters that the government might resort to violence since Abhisit has a mental disorder.

Edit: I have a feeling this kids parents are a little too gung ho. Hes donating blood to be thrown at govt. buildings.

They getting paid like in 08?
From what I remember in the last state of emergency when the northeastern region got their sandals in a knot, thaksin's party paid these poor farmers to go protest thus closing down the international airport in thailand along with the 2 other most prominent ones.
At the same time the republican national convention was going on in st paul where all those prime examples of frustrated young americans were throwing feces and bricks at law enforcers just making a great example at how worthy their cause was and how important their voices were, via thailand college students laid what was it? over 1,000 flowers in a line down a main drag in bangkok in support of a no violent solution.
My friend's Aunt was participating in the red's protest last time and her response about it was "OH it's so much fun come join us, we get free food too!"
Thaksin is also credited with their horrid drug control policy where you could shoot on site if you were even suspected of buying, carrying or selling ya-bah (thai meth)
He also did lots of good for the country IE trying to get rid of several brothel run areas in Phuket. All in all, he jacked the country, changed tax laws in a matter of hours so he wouldn't have to pay out taxes on sales of his companies. Fuck that guy
He's never going to be allowed back in less it's in cuffs.
I miss Thailand....never a dull moment |

Well as far as the protesters being paid, there is no question.

(I know I have to learn to embed these videos)
Thaksin is using the half of the fortune he has left after the Thai Supreme Court seized the other half 2 weeks ago.
I'm starting to get worried, as the main contention of protesters left are the super hardcore ones (about 60-70 percent of them are getting sick of being out in 100+ degree heat everyday, not to mention being accosted to give blood from their dehydrated bodies).
The "3 buddies" (protest leaders) as they are now called are saying they will "paralyze" Bangkok come Saturday. Basically they are gonna send small factions to all major intersections in the city to block traffic. Nice of them to wait till' Saturday I guess.
Anyways, I plan to be wherever things are happening, and I will post more pics as they come.
I guess this may not be so interesting to the forum but I am using this as a place to easily host my photos (if that's ok?). |

i was just about to post to thread to ask you what you thought of the whole situation down there. thaksin reminds me a bit of marion barry - his supporters focus on his populist initiatives and anti-elitist stance and totally ignore the fact that he's a swindling egomaniac.
is there a party in thailand that doesn't align itself with the royalists and elite but isn't tied to the PPP? i can't find anyone to root for in this fight....
also, is it safe to assume that most thai in the US are yellow shirts? i'm going to a songkran festival in a few weeks i'd like to learn people's perspective on what's going on but i don't what to offend any sensibilities. |

@ crash, I think you'll find most Thais , especially the ones protesting couldn't write a one page paper about Thaksin's political agendas. They would say some shit like, he wants to give power to the people or something like that and that'd be the extent of it. 80% or more, and that's being generous, wouldn't go to bangkok to protest if they weren't getting paid.
and
No it's not safe to assume that most US Thais are yellow shirts. Issan is the Northeastern region and the largest in the country which makes up the predominately red party. Most of the Thais I meet here are ether from Issan or Bangkok. Even if their pro yellow their parents may very well be pro red.
If you want to talk to them about it, just ask what their thoughts are on the current political scenario in Thailand. If they're wearing red well then no questions need be asked.
What songkran festival are you going to? One in the states?
@mancabbage
Climbing there is top notch. Soooooo many spots, massive communities of international climbers. You should go.
There's cho-mos everywhere. Thailand has just had a blind eye to it in the past. Cambodia's much worse as is malaysia in my opinion. Malaysia's fucking gross. They're pretty easy to spot. Old guys hanging out around town passing out coloring books and toys to local kids. You often find them floating down rivers or if dumped on the wrong beach, washed up on shore. Always dump your bodies on the East side of the Islands. They're not tolerated in prisons and get immediately effed once inside, very similar to US prisons, the cho-mos go first when there's riots. |
