How come Epitaph is releasing this ?
You're asking a multi-tiered question. The simple answer is that I signed up with Epitaph for a 3 album deal. This is the 3rd album.
"I guess it REALLY doesn't matter... but personally, I would feel that the DIY approach is still possible if you released your new albums on SFR."
I still do DIY on top of everything Epitaph is able to do. Which is why I'm on this forum responding to you and handling all my other social networking and preparing for another national tour in a van. And Epitaph is handling all the things I'm unable to secure on my own. Don't have the time, energy or enough staff for it.
"Is it that Epitaph has more commercial connections?"
I don't really know what that means, but the answer is probably yes.
"Can they get your music into more 'ed norton' movies etc. ?"
It's possible, but I'm the one who got my music into the Ed Norton movie you're referring to. Epitaph had nothing to do with that except for maybe raising my status or recognition level to the point where someone at Newline was like, "Wait...who is this Sage Francis fella?" But, yeah, I worked that out independently.
"If thats the case, then whatever, thats cool. make your money, congrats."
Well...thanks. I don't want to act like everyone should know the intimate details of the business but sometimes I feel that way so it's tough knowing what to say and what not to say. If you knew how many albums we had to sell in order to break even you'd look at the number...then you'd look at me...and then you'd go, "Mmmm....good luck. Hope you make that money back." Maybe. haha
This album simply could not have been made without the help from Epitaph (or Anti-, which is the imprint that is handling this album.) The nuts and bolts of the album, in all its capacity, was made possible mainly because of Andy Kaulkin (President of Anti-.) On the business side of things, they run on all pistons with a shared responsibility by many people who are all dedicated to their designated positions. With SFR we have very few people who handle various aspects of the business. The more I run SFR the more I come to realize how much we would need to grow before we could release a big album (such as Li(f)e) and have it see the return it would need to justify the expenses it requires.
Not to downplay SFR...we're a great DIY label. Epitaph is a mini-major. I just don't foresee us ever getting to the level that Epitaph is on due to the money and staff support it would require, but I'm not opposed to letting other people try and make that a reality. Haha. I really need to focus on my own career at the moment before I call it quits completely and tell the music world to have a nice day. |

That was a great response. thank you.
Without fully understanding all the aspects, I still get what you're saying about the expenses and staff it takes for this album etc.
Maybe I shouldnt have made the comment about the DIY.. it's obvious that SFR is running a successful business, with new independant releases.
I really hope your new album is amazing. |

All that matters is that SFR artist are bringing it in 2010. Sure, I hope you guys get as much money as you ever wanted, but all I care about is that release date. |

Do they ever have big ANTI label parties where you get to hang out with Neko Case and Tom Waits? |
