Opiate got steady play from me in high school. I mean, steady. When undertow came out, I couldn't stand it. Still can't fuck with it, or any of their catalog past Opiate.

I might have to listen to opiate tonight and see if it holds up.

That's quite a weird analogy.

Hardly. If you're going to categorize, Tool goes into "prog rock". I think categories are stupid for the most part, but the analogy is spot on.

Yeah... I don't think Tool is nu-metal. They're too proggy and Maynard does too much clean, legato singing. They are also too sophisticated to be nu-metal.

They also put on a hell of a live show. Danny Carey is a king of the drums.

tool is definitely nu-metal. writing songs in 5/4 and singing softly doesn't change anything. plenty of other nu-metal bands do the same thing. i.e. deftones, mudvayne, etc.

Wikipedia says that Tool is not Nu-metal. At least until one of you edits the article. Truthiness.

However, the artical on nu metal does acknowledge that:

Quote:

Korn's Jonathan Davis, Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington, Chevelle's Pete Loeffler, Slipknot's Corey Taylor, Taproot's Stephen Richards, Disturbed's David Draiman and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst have all cited Maynard James Keenan's signature style as their main influence, with Durst also calling the band Tool both his biggest musical influence and favorite band [5]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal

So there.

You can argue that tool is nu-metal or not, but just the fact that this is a possible debate should tip the hand that this band is on some serious wackness (except for opiate).

The rest of that paragraph continues with "Mike Patton of Faith No More is also credited for vocally influencing nu metal."

No one will say that Faith No More is nu metal simply because Mike Patton was an influence for actual nu metal bands.

Maynard might have influenced all these bands, but that doesn't make Tool nu metal.

Don't like Tool. That's perfectly fine, but as far as American mainstream rock goes, Tool is in a category all by itself. Lumping this band in with nu metal acts like Korn and LB is off point.

I'm surprised to see someone calling them wack, except for Opiate. Aenima is a great album as is Lateralus. You can't name another band out there that has a sound like Tool's. The sophistication in the drumming alone shows out every other so called "nu metal" act out there. The song writing is amazingly tight and well put together.

I'm not a huge Tool fan, but the hate here is kind of ridiculous.

Tool is much closer to Rush or Yes than they are to the Deftones, Korn or Slipknot. The only thing they share with those bands is distorted guitar and being played on the same radio stations.

If anything, Tool is progressive rock or art rock. I never thought of them as metal at all.

I think Mac Lethal said it best on the subject of Tool.

Calm Down Baby.

I used to like Tool... 'till they made the same album they made the last time they made the same album.

Every time they make a damn album it's the same album really.

And only stoners listen to their music.

It's silly

I'd like to rescind the last sentence. Saying Tool is "too sophisticated to be nu-metal" is stupid. To be honest, I like Tool. My knee-jerk reaction is that I don't want people to think they're nu-metal because everyone thinks nu-metal is wack. If they are, so be it. (It's okay to like bad music or music that people think is bad!)

I know Mac Lethal says he likes the first Radiohead album in a song.
