i do exactly what i want with my music. nothing more nothing less. this mixtape is living proof of it. this place isnt the only place i saw negative feedback on the chorus. i honestly just expected people to love it everywhere, i certainly do not want to aleinate the people im trying to appeal to on the track.
i wrote the verses first, and never wrote the chorus, it was essentially freestyled, i didnt really care about the chorus... i just tried to make it as much like the original as i could. when i said "my president is black and that dont mean jack" i thought... thats not exactly what i meant to say, but people will get it if they listen to the rest of the song. a lot of people were offended, but not at what i expected people to be offended about. and it wasnt just here, it was on a few other blogs and i didn't want a line like that to fuck up a very serious attempt to create dialogue and make a new kind of release. so i could have said... "fuck yall i know what i mean" but instead i chose to accept the criticism as a valid viewpoint. we elected a black president and i certainly dont want to diminish the historic nature of his election, last thing i wanted to do was have my song be a slap in the face to anyone... i am trying to confront racism on the song, not contribute to it.
no need to feed guilty k-o, this is just a conversation.
im also under no illusions that this will change most of my detractors' minds. some people just dislike sole, and thats understandable. however im not going to provide them the noose to lynch me with. the only valid criticism i've heard about this song, in my opinion was about the chorus. |

I prefer the sole version to the original one. I also took the chorus to mean that a man's skin color doesn't exempt him from criticism when he fucks up. That's all.
Granted, I'm not from the US so I don't have a first hand account of your race relations but they seem massively fucked up and deeply rooted in guilt spawned from years of race related oppression that still hasn't completely disappeared.
I recall a statistic that states that there are more black people in prisons in America than universities. Can anyone verify this? Land of the free, indeed. |

I don't know about the total numbers of black folks in university vs. prison, but a more widely cited statsitic is the total perecentage in each intsitution. For example, here is the undergraduate profile of UCLA (note affirmative action was repealed in CA)

UNDERGRADUATE PROFILE

It probably varies from state to state but this is institutional racism. |

I wish the same. I know I'm not the only one who would love to hear more of Slug and Sole on the same track... |

Deep Puddle Dynamics was my fill, personally. I'd be more interested in hearing Slug work with Alias on an album called Snow: The Gothhoppera--Wintery Selections from Slug and Alias. And then the cover would be Slug and Alias in Christmasy sweaters sharing a glass of egg nog next to an open fire. And there would be a track with the chipmunks on it. And an Amy Grant sample. |

slug, when we started this voyage, we were allies.
there is no reason why we can't be allies again.

You're a little bit older than me but I think I've become a lot more trusting as I've aged. My wife has encouraged me over the years to give more people the benefit of the doubt. And I think I do now. So I think you may be more paranoid for entirely different reasons. |
