My GF is white and had dreads for a year, people treated her like shit, and she cut them. Now she can get a job, and not have things thrown at her when she walks down the street. She cut her hair, and the problem was over. When she was treated like shit yes it sucked, but she was able to put 2 and 2 together fairly quickly.
I think that's the main idea here, Mem asked us for experiences & Opinions.
My friend married a Raver from NZ who I shit you not wore Pink EVERYTHING. Pink Hair, Pink dreds for a while, used to dye her eye brows pink, she even had these disgusting pink butterfly tattoos all over her arms, back, neck, chest, that had no outlining so it just looked like a skin disease. She insistently bitched about how people were mean to her, threw things at her, how she couldn't find a job. People would confront her daily and ask her if she was mentally ill.
It was maddening to listen to her complain, regardless of how close minded others were being. The guy in the bar mem, yes, was an asshole, and an old one, some old people are assholes. I am sorry he made you upset. But sometimes the gimmick of standing out gets a negative reaction.

again, dreads are now a part of so many diffrent subcultures, that I don't think it should be immedietely expected that if you wore them you would suddenly be treated like your were black.
I can think of two other girls who have posted here over the years who also had dreads at diffrent times, and didn't end up with this kind of flack.
I don't know, if you live in a real white bread place someone at some time is gonna fucking say some shit. She said she wasn't shocked, but she said she was bothered. Why? If she knew this sort of thing was gonna happen, why waste your time being bothered when it does.
Not sure what your comment about taking offense is about, but OK. I kind of understand what you are saying and agree with it.
For a lot of white folk, having dreads means you are a race traitor. Just because somebody hasn't told you it doesn't mean someone down the line hasn't thought it. I was straight up told at work once that I was nigger lover and other things. It didn't bother me because I know these people exist. I just kicked him out and that was that. All I am trying to say is that dreads puts you at odds with mainstream whiteness. Some will argue that dreads are becoming another form of whiteness altogether, not gonna debate that now, but I know for sure somewhere down the line dreads will get you shit from white folk and sometimes from black folk.
As far as poisonfree's comments go, I think you are missing the point dude. How do you know she's rocking a gimmick? I know we are talking about dreads, but maybe you are approaching this from the wrong perspective. I wasn't on some "deal with it" shit. I'm on some, "this is the reality and the sooner you understand the deal the sooner better you'll be able to deal with these pieces of shit and school them a bit." People shouldn't have to cut their hair to get a job and not get pissed on by society. The dreads are the problem. Society's bullshit way of dealing with people different from them is the problem.

My response was mainly focused on the thread title: "Tired of being judged"
emphasis on the word tired. this isn't new to her, she is tired of it, if she was tired of it truly, she would cut them. I don't think she should, but you can't claim to be sincerely fed up if there is something fairly simple that can be done to alleviate most of the headache.
again I don't think she should, but it's the road she wants to walk, it's got some hiccups. |

i have a friend, and he is white with dreads, and it is a terrible look...especially now that he is going bald.
we grew up in small town ohio and he would complain about the same thing. "these people are so close-minded" "they don't understand the cultural significance" etc.
he used to come up to columbus to visit, and still get made fun of...a supposedly liberal college kind of atmosphere.
you're gonna get shit anywhere...just suck it up and keep moving. or find a comfortable way to change.

Some of the bumper stickers blew my mind that I just could not help but laugh and realise south park episodes had prepared me for this. I should narrow my quoting. Not all is lost, mem. What that guy was really saying is that he thought you were really hot and he'd like to make white babies with you, or may have his son do it.
