Haha just watched this video. Does ?uestlove or whatever have any idea the words that are coming out of his mouth? I've not seen someone look so puppety in my life. Are they at gunpoint in this video?

Just inane stupid bullshit falling out of their mouths. Amazing.

It would have been better if they had just done a corny beer commercial.

Oh well. Neither of these cats are important to me. If this weren't posted here, I would have never even known about it.

I remember when ?uestlove got his mitts on Common for Like Water for Chocolate. I was like "What is this bullshit?" There really isn't a good track on this album. "The Light"? Fuck no. The same thing happened to Blackalicious after NIA on Blazing Arrow. ?uestlove steps in and suddenly there's an entirely different vibe to the whole outfit. Not bad, per se, but a strange departure, not a progression, from the Bay Area sound Chief Xcel was so adept at creating. I have no idea what happened between Gift of Gab and Xcel, or if they've reconciled, but I could imagine that something like this would get between their partnership. Sometimes I wish The Roots could go back to their Illadelph Halflife days. Nostalgia's a bitch sometimes.

Uh, Gift of Gab and Xcel have never had issues and they work together as Blackaliciouis still. Don't know what you're talking about really. Blazing Arrow was different from NIA in a lot of ways, but it was still Blackalicious and Xcel was still the main producer. The only song ?uestlove was even credited on was "Nowhere Fast", otherwise it was all Xcel, DJ Shadow, or Cut Chemist.

The real thing is that they released it on MCA (hence the track with Ben Harper) and thusly changed things up a bit from their self-produced Quannum roots.

Anyway...

I forgot about The Craft. You're right, Stumbleweed. I always attributed the stylistic shift to ?uestlove for whatever reason, not the signing to MCA, which makes a lot of sense now. I still think he had more of an influence then you give him credit for, but who knows?

At any rate, I'm not a fan of ?uestlove. He seems to have to the power of taint on his fingertips. That's just my opinion though. It's probably just this snifter of Hennessey talking.

The only thing that ruins rappers faster than ?uestlove's production is Erykah Badu's vajay.

I feel the same way about ?uestlove's "magic touch" on production
if you want a bland boring slow plodding track he is your man.

as for blackalcious, ya they mellowed a bit from NIA to Blazing Arrow a lil more R&B on the choruses of Blazing Arrow. I've been wondering what is up with blackaclicious lately and the decisions they made for Gift of Gab to do his solo album and Chief Xcel to do the Maroons (which was a very underrated EP) then Xcel, Gab, Lateef an some other dude as the Mighty Underdogs, Blackalicious made alot of noise with A2G EP and "Nia" I believe Nia moved close to 100K units on the independent tip instead of keeping their foot on the gas pedel they ventured off and now there an afterthough.
A2G EP an NIA restored my faith in hip hop as lame as it sounds when they came out. I want Blackalcious back an I think Xcel is the most slept on producer his production on NIA is flawless.

icarus -

i wasn't necessarily smh because he was being a hypocrite, more because he was being a jagoff. his conscious bullshit just compounds the jagoffness, to me.

somehow i'd rather people be irresponsible consciously, then be irresponsible and think they're on some righteous shit.

Like Water For Chocolate is the fucking truth. And that's because of Dilla. ?uest's hand in that was as an EP for the Ummah whereas Dilla handled almost all of the production. The only fault of that record is that it is too fucking long.

The only thing we're going to agree on here is how long the album is. Otherwise I don't care who produced it: it has a few good songs but is otherwise mediocre. It's telling to me that the best beat on the album is Premier's. Some folks dig the neo-jazz hop, but I can't get into it.
