Templeton Rye comes from not too far from my hometown and the production is pretty small but I get the impression it's starting to gain a rep in lots of places so I guess that backs that up. The brewpub here used to make some beers that they aged in Templeton casks from the distillery. I don't drink a lot of american whiskey but I don't think I'm being a homer to say that stuff is the shit. 'Round these parts that's probably the leading "gentlemanly gift" whiskey for when you want to get someone something really nice.
I'm a scotch drinker myself. I think my favorite I've ever found is Glenkinchie. I don't know how widespread it is as far as distribution but it's pretty incredible. Smoky and mellow, crazy fruity notes in the middle. I can't drink the stuff that's incredibly peaty like a Laphroaig or something like that as much. The peat just gets to be too much for me. I'm mostly about the Highlands. |

But do you own a square foot of land on Islay like me? You're missing out on authentic Scottish bog, man.
If I really have extra extra extra money and feel like throwing it down I'll go with this:

God, it'd be like liquid gold. |

I'm an ale fan mostly, but I like whiskey too. Jameson 12 year old is my favourite, but I like ordinary Jameson when I'm more broke.
Kilbeggan is a nice drop too.
I haven't gotten into the Scottish stuff much.
We have a couple of good whiskey bars here, with crazy huge selections.
EDIT: The protestant whiskey is nice also - Bushmills or Black Bush. Don't know how I forgot about that stuff. Must have been my catholic upbringing. |

Just took a little whisky tour at Glengoyne. Really great stuff. It's not picture here, but my favorite was the 21-year. Sweet, but not saccharine, with a nice deep amber color. Also tried the Teapot Dram, but I wasn't really a fan. The distillery was really great too, with a little pond and waterfall in the backyard. No big deal.
