The clicking means, basically, that the heads can't sync with the discs in the drive. This usually happens when one of the heads crashes into the disc, or something equally catastrophic. If the drive is spinning up and "clicking", it's most likely hosed. If the heads and disc can't sync, there's no way you're going to get data out of the drive.

Freezing can work, but it's a temporary solution. Make sure you know exactly what and where the data your friend wants is. Have him make you a list of the most important stuff. If you do get the drive up and running, get what you can as fast as you can.

Also note that when you pull the drive out of the freezer and spin it up, it's going to develop condensation on the inside of the drive. This can cause more problems if you don't let it dry out. Give the drive a couple of days to dry out after each cycle of freezing. If the freezing thing doesn't work on the first or second try, it's probably not going to, but if you're really desperate you may get lucky.

As usual, tell your friend to back up his data. Anything that you care about should be backed up and stored in another location so you can get your data back when (not if) your system crashes.
