Americans Fear Nano-Technology  Reply with quote

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/20/two-thirds-of-americans-think-nanotechnology-is-morally-unaccept/

Quote:

Given the fact that most of the nanotech developments we've seen have to do with making smaller transistors or generating electricity, we're not exactly sure why a recent study conducted by the researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that two-thirds of American think nanotechnology is "morally unacceptable" -- perhaps they didn't hear about that team that used nanotech to inscribe the Bible on the head of a pin? Overall, Americans were far less accepting of pint-size technology than other countries -- 72 percent of French respondents thought nanotech was morally okay, as did 54 percent of the UK residents polled and 62 percent of the Germans. Still, we're left wondering why anyone would find a reason to object to nanotechnology -- unlike biotech, we just don't see a lot of moral dilemmas posed by the research. Well, apart from that whole gray goo thing -- but if that's the risk we have to take to finally score a pair of electric pants, you can sign us right up.

2/3's of Americans are morally opposed to whatever you've got so this isn't a big surprise.

Most likely, 2/3 of americans have no idea what the fuck nanotechnology is. I doubt any who isn't apposed to laptops would be apposed to nanotech.

Nano Technology is some serious shit.
I don't have time to link anything right now, but look up the potential cons of it.

That's the thing. The american gut reaction is rather than admit we don't know anything about something, and then try to find out more, we'd rather just oppose it.

We're twenty years away from witch trials again.

I think the possibilities for human advancement shouldn't be overlooked. Obviously there's fear with any kind of technology. But maybe nano-technology can help us transcend our current condition and become something better? If it destroys us, then oh well, it was going to happen anyways.

for serious. you guys should read prey by micheal criton. all about nano technology and programming that mimics animal behaviour. esentially the nano particals turn into an evolving animal that eats things and reproduces. pretty cool

All this proves is that 2/3 of Americans don't know nanotech can be used to PROTECT FREEDOM. For real though, this statistic is bullshit until we see the questions they asked in the study.

How do you know the statistic is bullshit until you find out for sure? Isn't the burden of proof on you to prove it's bullshit before you call it bullshit?

And whatever questions they asked, they asked the same ones to the French and British. And got statistically significant different responses.
