DO NOT MISS these Sage spoken word shows!  Reply with quote

Full disclosure: Ok, I'm on the bill too. If you come to these shows you'll
see me as well. Big woop, wanna fight about it?

THAT SAID:

Wowwwwww... Tonite's Sage performance at Bumbershoot was easily
one of my favorite Francis sets, and it was an abridged version
of what he'll be doing for the rest of the week.

This is so much more than your boy doing his rap songs acapella ...
Picture a talking show but with more direction, and actual pieces being
done throughout ...

Great, great personal stories, jokes, backstory about the songs you
know and love ... None of it rehearsed banter...
Doing great, unique versions of poems and songs ...

In a spoken word setting, where the crowd is not full of drunks and
people chattering .... super super intimate. People occasionally yelling
out requests ... Sage taking requests and giving backstory about the
songs people are requesting. So much fun to be a part of as an audience member.

I'm gonna love the shit out of these next few shows...
Finishing my set and immediately pulling up a chair.
I am not gonna miss a second.

Don't sleep! I don't give a shit if it's corny for me to be saying this about
shows that I'm on! This is GREAT, rare Sage Francis shit.

Thanks, Bernard. Hearing your laughs from the side of the stage was a good indication that what I was doing was working out. It was kind of scary stepping out onto that stage without the usual safety nets of music beneath me. I've done spoken word shows before, but this is feeling a bit more fresh and dangerous. haha. However, the more I do it the more it will be fresh and the less you will laugh...so i'm going to need to keep you busy by sprinkling your various personas throughout the set.

Much thanks to Seattle. The crowd was beyond perfect. It was as if someone primed the audience and told them how to help out my performance before I hit the stage. It was a lot of fun. And the standing ovation at the end was damn kind. I'm not used to people sitting during a show, but seeing everyone stand at the end to applaud was hot shit.

much respeck

the sage experience is completely different in a spoken word. Those 40 minutes at the london exhibition kicked me in the throat. In a good way.

Its not a RI thing. The shows are in seattle, portland, san francisco and then LA.

This type of tour might be revisited in the Spring.

damn! scary, dangerous? wow. i always thought you were at least as comfortable if not MORE comfortable doing spoken word sets. shows what i know!

there are few live performances i would put higher on my list then a Sage Francis spoken word set...

Dylan live, with just a guitar.
Tori Amos.
Rage? maybe.
Jeff Mangum, live at Jitter Joe's.

Tom Inhaler live in the shower?
(if i got to be in the tub by his well traveled feet)

not for nuthin',
but a Bernard Dolan acapella set would also be extremely high on my list

maybe top 20 or 25 out of anyone, anywhere...
i'd be the only idiot in the back chanting
"ALL THE HITS
ALL THE HITS
ALL THE HITS!!"

"Hermeddo's Day Dream... DO HERMEDDO's Day dream!
the Light Poem, do the light poem...
you promised you'd do Thunder Ray, YOU PROMISED!!
WHAT THE FUCK DO I CARE ABOUT THE SURFACE,
SOUND WILL TELL ME EVERY-THING!!
I'LL RESONATE FOR YOU...
i'll
RESONATE
FOR
YOUOUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!"

I still have one of the first runs of the Failure
and one of the only ever Bernard Dolan poetry books...
and i might, i just might... have several loose leaf sheets of poems thrown to the ground during various Bernard live performances in a special folder where i keep various special pieces of poetry...

Bernard's got mad shit in the vault. video's you never even heard of. Like Prince. ( :

Yeah, really. Bernard hoards all his material. The only stuff I've heard is the Failure from when he put it up to download and the pitiful few that he's put on Myspace. We demand recordings! We demand publications!

aw sheesh. thanks j.

i swear to god the vault will be opened soon.

when the failure gets re-released, it's going to be a completely new
album. i think it may have one track in common with the original.
i re-approached and re-wrote things, found better recordings of other
things ... replaced things i'm not too into anymore. i'm very very
excited about it.

another great show last night ... LA tomorrow (i think)... in LA,
bombzo will have a chorus line of dancing minutemen behind him.
just kiddinnn... maybeee.

Great performance last night in Portland. Thanks for coming through our sleepy little logging town. I was glad to have seen Evel Knievel's death defying act for the first time. Also, I enjoyed hearing Sage perform songs off of albums in this format. If you're in the Bay or LA, don't sleep.

Edit: Now, that I finally know what a Bumbershoot is, I need a cold shower. Thanks Fergie Ferg.

every time sage comes to my neck of the woods (socal), i make it a priority to go to his shows and stand in the very first row. i heard about his spoken word show in la and didn't end of going because i thought it wouldn't be as good as his regular shows. and i'm realizing now that i'm kind of a huge idiot.
damnit. does anyone know where i could see film of his la show?
