10 Songs that Put Me to Sleep at Night  Reply with quote

I need soft and quiet songs in order to fall asleep at night. I usually crash just before sunrise, and since my mind is running on all pistons up to that point I need this stuff to help me downshift. I left Mazzy Star out of this list since any Mazzy Star album can pretty much do the trick, but what kind of bullshit mixtape would that be? This order is a bit screwy since I had to remove a bunch of songs in order to consolidate the list, but here are ten songs that help send me into dreamland.

1) M. Ward "Four Hours in Washington" from the Transistor Radio LP

This song is the only uptempo song on the list. It's a good song to start the Sleep Mix off with because the lyrics explain how it's "5 in the morning and I'm wishing it was 1." Although the song is fast and heavy, the reverb softens it in a nice way. After a long run you can't just come to a complete stop...you have to walk for a while and let your body adjust. That's what this song is for.

2) Tom Waits "Alice" from the Alice LP

This song sends me into a downshift. It sets a good melancholy vibe, and although the story Tom Waits tells is sad it is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I especially like the sound of the snare brushes. Almost sounds like the song is being played on scratched up vinyl.

3) Leonard Cohen "Suzanne" from the "Songs of Leonard Cohen" LP

This is probably the most popular song of Leonard Cohen's, but I didn't get into his music til a few years ago. Every time I hear this song it sends me back to a co-op living space in Austin, TX. The person who shared this song with me is probably the person Leonard is describing in the song.

4) Billy Joel "And So it Goes" from the Storm Front album

As popular of an artist Billy Joel is, I have never heard anyone talk about this song. This is another track that sends me back to a particular time and it sooths me for some reason. A simple and sad song that is sung in a way that I can sing along too if I'm awake enough to do it at this point.

5) Vincent Gallo "When" from the When LP

Again, another simple song with incredibly simple lyrics. I think I need this kind of stuff at this hour of night. Vincent Gallo's songs have a nice, warm feel to them and I like to imagine it's a girl singing.

6) Angelo Badalamenti's "Falling" from Twin Peaks soundtrack

This is the theme from Twins Peaks. It's the version with vocals. Puts me in a strange mood. It's a good soundtrack for most of my dreams.

7) Yann Tiersen's "Comtine D'un Autre Ete: L'apres Midi" from the Amelie Soundtrack

I've heard this song about a thousand times by now. I love piano songs, and since this one is easy to follow due to the repetition I can pretend that I'm playing it. Fingers on the blanket.

8) Chopin: Nocturnes in E Flat Major

I can't pretend to play this song. This song just reminds me to lay still and forget about faking the funk.

9) Neil Young "Fallen Angel" from the "Mirror Ball Album" he did with Pearl Jam

This song should be listed twice because it needs to be played back to back. The way it starts and ends makes it easy to loop back into itself without anyone noticing. I've always loved Neil Young's voice and I especially love hearing it over these keys.

10) Alone in Kyoto by Air on the Lost in Translation soundtrack

Not only does this film have the best opening shot in the history of cinema, but it has a great ambient soundtrack. I take a special liking to this song because of the transitions it goes through. It has the sound of waves crashing which become more audible when the music switches up, but I first heard this song in the dead of the winter and I thought there was a snow plow outside my house. That's one of my favorite sounds.

Honorable Mention Hidden Track: Stars of the Lid "A Lovesong (For Cubs)" on The Tired Sounds of... LP

This songs sounds like it's actual purpose is to set people into a deep sleep. The slow change of chords...they melt into one another. It has an incredible calming effect. Even though it's 7 minutes long, I put this song on repeat about 15 times just incase I'm not asleep yet.

Premiere Symptoms is great. Some of their stuff builds real slow, but the music is wonderful when it climaxes.

Really great list BTW.

haha... i thought that billy joel song was my guilty secret.

maybe everyone thinks that and that's why you never hear it mentioned... i'm also a big fan of that neil young song.

sometimes i go to sleep to indian snake charmer music ... really unsettling alien insecty drone...

sometimes i listen to hope sandoval and the warm inventions - bavarian fruit bread

lately i've been going to sleep to carla bozulich - evangelista a lot... i highly recommend that album ...

sometimes ttc lectures

sometimes noam chomsky

sometimes random albums i'm looking for samples in...

'Travelling Light' by Tindersticks.

I'll refund your money if you don't love this song with all your heart.

And 'Echoes' by Pink Floyd. 23 minutes of pure lullaby.

I like to listen to Leo Sayer, Brian Protheroe, Emitt Rhodes, Nilsson, Glenn Gould or stuff like Judee Sill or british folk records & sparse psychy stuff. It depends on the season. My favorite album to fall asleep to is probably Nillson Sings Newman.

i like to listen to native american music to chill. 1 suggestion would be Dan Gibson's "Gentle World-Native Spirit". i can meditate with this music or just kick back and clear my head from all the bullshit of the day.
