he's typically the guy who posts gay porn in threads without any warning.

He's also investigating Knowmore.org for alleged human rights violations.

While chasing my newspaper boat into the gutter, I met a man living in the drain claiming to be a Mr. B. Dolan The Dancing Clown. He gave me a balloon, which floated, and told me if I came down into the sewer with him I could float too.
I went down, but I didn't float much.

His hello sounded distant and not because I was in Palm Beach, Florida and he was in Providence, Rhode Island. We spent November 2, 2004 phone banking, canvassing, and finally dragging voters to the polls; myself in Florida with Emilyís List and Bernard across New England. One of the last phone calls he made that day was to a elder sister in New Hampshire who didnít have a car, so he rushed out to pick her up and bring her to a voting booth. By the time I called him late that night, we both knew that George W. Bush would be president of the United States for a second term despite our years of protesting, months of political organizing, weeks of sleepless nights traveling across the states. Looking back on how far Bernard has driven since then, and what drives him now, I can clearly hear that far-away tone in his voice and I know thatís when he decided he was tired of being powerless and begging change from systems of oppression. I know thatís when Knowmore, Inc. got born.

During a time when many activists felt lost or doubted their own fortitude, Bernard was just beginning what has been two years of sleepless nights, depleted bank accounts, and personal sacrifices in the making of Knowmore, Inc. While the election certainly affected the landscape of activism in this country--be it an added sense of urgency, more legal barriers, or less access to resources--the outcome was less of a catalyst and more a clarification of vision for Bernard. He had the courage to see our new political space as one of possibility while simultaneously recognizing the need to build an organization which directly combated rampant abuses of power by the government and corporations.

Knowmore, Inc is a grassroots non-profit dedicated to building a database which exposes the practices and questions the products of businesses, conglomerates, political action groups, and public figures. This information is housed on the website www.knowmore.org. Each profile is equipped with an innovative rating system that measures the subjectís impact on the environment and globalization, the ethical treatment of workers, fair trade policies, and political influence. The goal of Knowmore is to make unbiased information documented by citizens available to citizen consumers who can then use their buying power more consciously.

For Bernard, the 2004 election cemented in his lifestyle choices and organizational tactics the philosophy that Americans can vote with their dollar. Since then he has worked tirelessly to convince others that not only are they capable of thinking critically about what they buy, and not only do they have the right to demand that they be treated fairly as both workers and consumers, they are also an integral part in educating and improving life in their community. Knowmore, Inc was built on the foundation that our community must be defined as global if we are to defend against attacks on human rights committed by supranational conglomerates and government policies which affect the entire world.

The internet is undoubtedly a challenging ground for a non-profit to dig its heels into, but Bernard has done so bravely while acknowledging the need to address the privileges which divide users of technology. While the wiki technology that his organization relies upon is not an original concept, Bernardís application of the resource is creative and specific making Knowmore a unique and ever regenerative organ within the larger, growing body of internet activism. Rather than competing with these other organizations, which is so often the case due to limited funding and issue overlap, Knowmore serves as a resource for all activists and citizens regardless of field or interest. The site has the capability to document any aspect of globalization and international trade from exploitative government policy to sexist advertising to environmental degradation.

As an activist, Bernard has struggled with the boundaries between the personal and the political. Iíve seen him struggle with what he puts in his body and how it affects the world around him and among other decision, choose to be vegetarian. Iíve seen him struggle with wanting to be a provider for his partner, family, and community while having limited resources and support in the difficult process of building Knowmore. These struggles are important only to illustrate his integrity: he earnestly desires to enact his politics in his private and public life as founder of Knowmore, Inc.

Recently, Knowmore has gotten national attention because of an article written by Bernard on the website about American Apparel. Because of the provocative nature of the article, he was attacked by the CEO of American Apparel who doubted Bernardís commitment to publishing accurate facts. Bernardís integrity, and the good business sense to take an opportunity when one presented itself, brought him back and forth across the country at his own expense to interview American Apparel garment workers, tour the facilities, and meet the CEO face to face. He wasnít satisfied until he had both sides of the story: he interviewed representatives from UNITE!, the union which accused American Apparel of blocking workers from joining, only after relentlessly researching the history of both organizations. His effort has resulted in more than attention from national labor players. His is the kind of exemplary journalism which could provide the public with a totally new way of seeing the products they encounter every day and their own power in choosing them.

I can think of a story which embodies the importance of his organization, and the kind of person itís founder is. A small and ordinary story which years later has me thinking about our power to affect each otherís lives every single day, and how, over the years these actions and their documentation might add up to something incredible. This was before the election that birthed Knowmore; Bernard and I were preparing for it by doing public education about issues and candidates in New Hampshire. We stopped at one personís house who invited us in to use the bathroom and talk at her kitchen table. She opened up and shared with us how worried she was about the election because of her familyís struggles with health care and affording prescription drugs. Bernard was so moved by the role of companies and their products in this womanís life, he took her email and promised to do as much research about her situation as he could.

He delivered on that promise. With a resource like Knowmore.org in place, Bernard could have found out what products drug companies were manufacturing and how ethically they were doing so, discovered alternative companies, and explored the current government policies surrounding the manufacturing of these products. Because of Knowmore, research like this could have been simpler and more accessible to a person who literally depended on that information for her well being. Knowmore is dedicated to chronicling and resisting corporate attacks on democracy, worker's and human rights, fair trade, business ethics and the environment. By doing so, Knowmore empowers community members to voice their struggle as workers and citizens impacted by big business and develop and patronize alternatives to those businesses. I must stress that Knowmore is not affiliated with any party or way of living; it is instead a database of choices against the illusion of choice, a database of questioning practices that demands better practices. Bernard was and is who I call on in times of personal and political crisis because he refuses to accept this world when there could be a better one.
