can't believe that went down that way. seriously disappointing.

I'm seriously questioning whether I can in good conscience participate in this forum. I feel used.

of course I'll prolly get banned for making this post anyhow, but I'm not trying to stand by. if the struggle really gets "respect" then I won't get banned. But dissent is clearly not welcome on this forum unless it sounds the way certain people want it to sound. I am not trying to be an advertising vehicle for people who solve arguments by silencing dissent. I am not trying to be part of a community that again is just subject to the kind of domination that too much power and too little humility causes. I'm sick of self-appointed leaders of activist communities mirroring the leaders they are supposed to be working to oppose. There's no amount of good enough that can justify undemocratic leadership. If sage really wants to change the world, he's going to have to change the way he does business. and I'm not even saying everything here. I guess I expect one of three things to happen: 1) I get banned 2) I get an email asking for my opinion or 3) I get ignored.

whatever. this is one of those "i seriously need to re-evaluate what I think I'm accompishing with where I invest my time" moments. i'm just looking for a little help. but no one can say nothin, it turns out.

Embryo, I think you are overstating the purpose and perhaps the importance of this forum to call it a "movement." Perhaps some members could be considered to be part of a movement, perhaps even the core members...but as a whole, this forum is another aggrandization of like-minded music fans where they can facelessly opine about matters both trivial and of great importance. Sage is no more the leader of a movement on this forum than Ronald McDonald is the leader of hamburger eaters around the world.

That being said, the banning of Awww Damn is sure to be a discredit to the discourse on this forum.

I'd like to think that, Reggie. REally. I like to pretend that this is a forum of people with equal power to speak and share and that it's just a random group.

But then I realize that that's not true. This is Sage's forum, and he runs it like he knows it. We have a very consistently large lurking audience, and whether we like it or not, Sage -is- in control of a movement, and he is also actively movement-building with his current tour. I think that when a community is mobilized for anything at all, that's a movement. And Sage has done a lot to inspire people to believe that such motion might be useful and possible. That's why it's so important to follow through and not become everything that everyone is so cynical about to begin with. That's what kills movements. And I don't think everyone would be so inspired by Makeshift Patriot or Slow Down Ghandi if either of them included the words "If you don't come to my show you're a weak ass snob." Because th sentiment is fucking poisonous.

I'm not trying to build relationships where I am, or anyone else is, subjugated.

Actually, she may not have been banned, but "we won't miss you" sure implies that she is not welcome by Sage.

But this forum was exclusive from the start. Sage is a lot of things; egalitarian is not one of them.

I don't think exclusivity is the same thing as what I'm talking about.

honestly, in my little "we practice what we preach" fantasy world, forum registration is controlled by an elected group of 3 or 4 people, bannings go by a peer review committee, and if people are causing trouble it's dealt with love, rather than spite. and no one has the power to lock threads in order to have the last word.

no, but "abuse of authority" is only worth contesting if it's somebody else doing it.

it's just gross hypocrisy. and honestly, I am OK with hypocrisy, as long as people don't find ways to be unaccountable about it. which is a privilege that sage exploits time and time again in this community.

honestly, yeah. I can't deal with this anymore. There's only one person who can make this forum better and he's not interested.

5 years here and I finally break 1000 posts.

why did it have to be during a battle with trav?

i think leaving well enough alone may be the lesson here. so much is lost in text. if any of these "discussions" occured in person shit would be handled much differently. it would just be banter and the faces would tell the true story of like and dislike.

"every man is a movment , but no movement is a man"--sole said that recently over a beat. (or something like it)

You guys take this shit way too fucking seriously.

I swear I feel like a lot of the forum posters live in a different world.

You guys are posting on a fucking message board on some rappers webpage. People treat this place like it's the holly mecca of the internet. I mean shit, people are posting in threads about how they aren't feeling Sage anymore bla bla. The minute I stop liking Sage's music and his message, I'll be gone from this place, not fucking getting another 2000 posts about freeing guatamala.

I just don't get it.

I feel you, GrtWht, but individualism is such a killer. Nothing is going to improve if there's zero commitment to community.

I also need to place this in the context of what I originally came here to post about, which is an anti-war protest that we just had on Boston Common following a walkout at various schools. The same shit is happening in that movement, and again, it's poison. White dudes are way too fucking loud; people are being dishonest about their motivations -- dishonest with themselves and with everyone else. If I hear of one more Socialist front group wiht a name like "Youth Against War and Racism" I'm going to fucking punch a smarmy white dude with a socialist t-shirt in the fucking grill.
