It could be directed towards Sage, but i highly doubt it. If you know Esoteric's music, it's probably a diss to 'nerd rap' in general. He constanty does battle tracks, aimlessly, so I highly doubt he would be talking about Sage. He probably doesn't particularly like the type of rap he mentions(obviously), but I wouldn't make sense for him to 'call out' sage. If you or he know anything about sage's music, it's difficult to be classified. He ventures into unknown categories, hard ish, mellow, intellectual, does freestyles with the best of them, so i highly doubt he is calling out sage here, probably rap that he dislikes in general. Peace

Nerd rap? as far as I can tell it is artsy or introspecticve or intellectual or sci-fiish raps done by white people.

I saw white people cause ive yet to hear anyone attack Kool Keith, or hieroglyphics or deltron 3030 etc... as nerd rap.

that's cause cats like kool keith and heiro and cats like them have been at this for over a decade and have managed to gain appeal outside of the nerdy/artsy indie crowd. A lot of so called nerd rappers nowadays aren't really known for goin out n payin dues. They see overnight internet success, drop a 12" and expect it to sell cause a few geeks over dl-ed their shit at mp3.com.

not sayin this about all of the cats who're lumped into that category (ie sage francis, some of the def jux clan etc etc etc, cause those cats have managed to do the same thing heiro, kool keith and others like em have managed to do.), but it can be said with a lot of it out there nowadays.

I really don't. Because I am fairly confident he's not referencing me. Does he respect my music? no. But he's not trying to call me out. I know that.

djdee pretty much ended the discussion about the validity of "nerd rap" here.

And I had a big argument with some doofus a while ago over whether or not Kool Keith and Del were "nerd rap"; I said they were, dood said they weren't. I wish I had never gotten into it with that moron.

i reckon dudes like Eso are getting worried that their simple battle raps and so forth are become more and more redundant due to people who actually have things to say......

but your right Dj Dee

balance is good....

thats why sage is so dope coz he can bring different styles and shit...plus he likes to have fun.....

i dont know how artists can pidgeonhole themselves....fuck that i get bored writing the same sorta shit all the time......

Write Songs About what you know  Reply with quote

People can only write songs about what they know and feel. Its all hip hop. Everyone likes their own styles. I just personally would rather listen to someone that makes you think about your own life or makes you say "wow" at their intelligence rather than listen to someone that just talks about how dope they are.

I don't think it was all that big before El-P....unless you count....truckers.
