Francis succeeds on own

Underground rapper Sage Francis is steering clear of media giant Clear Channel.

Underground rapper Sage Francis might make a few corporate enemies on his current tour. Dubbed the (Expletive) Clear Channel tour, Francis is challenging the media giant's dominance in the entertainment industry by seeking outside promoters and playing venues that aren't affiliated with Clear Channel.

Even without its backing, Francis, who performs at Club Freedom on Tuesday, seems poised for big things. He developed an Internet buzz after winning several slam-poetry and rhyme battles in the late '90s. His work varies from the personal - one of his earlier discs is called Personal Journals - to the political, such as Emperor's New Clothing, with the lyrics, "Beads of sweat form above the eyes of a heathen Emperor / Who won't get on his feet and step outside into the freezing temperature / He wants to adjust the global thermostat / But he's so remote. . . . and you can't control the world like that."

Now, after years of selling self-produced CDs at shows, he has signed to indie-punk label Epitaph and is preparing his debut, due later this spring. His recent album with the group Non-Prophets, Hope, released last year on Lex/Warp Records, is earning critical raves for its clever, intricate wordplay laid over old-school hip-hop beats.

For Tuesday's show, Francis is performing two sets, one solo with a beat box and a full-band set with the Non-Prophets.

Sage Francis: 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, Club Freedom, 919 E. Apache Blvd., Tempe. $15. (480) 929-9003.

Dope.

How big a paper is it? Local, as in local for the entire state of Arizona, or just for a certain district in it? I'm not so sure of how that stuff works.
