They are also really fucking good. In fact, they're probably the best Russian metal band out there.

I've been listening to that Acrania album quite a bit. Really brutal stuff, love it. Thanks for the heads up on them.

Also been digging the new Nails album, Abandon All Life.

Only one band has really impressed me lately: Katalepsy. Holy fucking pile-drived buttplug, their Autopsychosis will rip you a new asshole. If you liked Acrania mentioned above, this will impress you. There is an absolute glut of metal albums out there, and 95% of them range from decent to mediocre to awful. This fits into the other 5%. I've already listened to it once today, and I'm ready to gear it up again. So fast, so brutal. Oh, and this is their most recent release. I've listened to some of their earlier stuff, but it's not nearly as good as this.

In my late-night bandcamp perusing, I also stumbled across Mournful Congregation - The Book of Kings. Pure doomage, folks. Picture an enormous turtle walking backward across a glacier, and that's pretty much the pace for the record. The vocals are equally slow utterances that are sort of like this deep, raspy whisper. It's great for background music, no doubt, but you might feel like you're on the threshold of Black Mass or something.

I also found a band named (poorly) Ossuary Anex. The name didn't really strike the fear of Satan into my heart, but the music goes from frenzied to pummeling really quickly, and is generally awesome. The Russians are really starting to get a scene together. Their label, SFC Records, actually has a pretty great catalog that will tickle your metal fancy. Some of it is excellent, some of it is standard, and some of it just isn't my cup of meat. But dig in.

Thanks to consistently awesome Willowtip Records I've come across another metal band worth checking out called Saprogenic. Apparently they've been around for a while, and they're from Detroit, but they've escaped my attention up to this point. Expect nothing but pure, brutal, and straight-forward death metal. Well, there are a few divergent Scandinavian-esque riffs, but it's mostly just a ramrodding of your eardrums.

Check out Ulcerate, folks. I've avoided them on account of what I viewed as a stupid name, but that was a mistake. They are a cut above the typical death metal band, working a lot of interesting changes and tweeks into their sound that keep it from being overly monotonous. It's fierce, it's fast, and it's really fucking good. You can get their four-track EP The Coming of Genocide for free on bandcamp, but the rest of their catalog will cost you.

Justin Bieber continues to be a blight on this planet. That kid is going to implode in under a decade. Trust.
