Aupheus (UK, Strange Famous Records) provides his signature "doom-bap" touch on this mix of hip-hop songs released from '85 to '88. Some of these tracks are classics, others are more obscure, but all were all chosen by Aupheus due to their sparse production style which allowed him to layer additional soundscapes and give them a new, fresh twist. ENJOY!

This is ace, a really nice way of bring back the old goodies. I'm in love with this mix.

Here's how Aupheus described his process for this mix:

"The inspiration for this mix came primarily from being a fan of music from this era. I didn't want to just do a straight-up beatmatched old-school rap mixtape, there are already plenty of those out there, I wanted to try something different, so I came up with the idea of taking records with that sparse drum-machines and rap production style, with enough space to add additional elements, and layering them with electronic / ambient music and soundtracks.

Some of the original hip hop tracks are edited more than others, the rules I set out were to use no instrumentals or acapellas, I wanted to keep them largely intact but to put a fresh spin on them. The records I've used to layer them up range from stuff from the early 70s up to present day. I haven't revealed my sources but there are clues in some of the mix titles.

I put this together using 2 Technics 1210s, Vestax PMC 06 Pro mixer, a Macbook Pro running Logic Pro, Ableton Live and Audition, plenty of vinyl and a couple of CDs."
