I thought this forum was always just a series of floating letters. I must have been doing it wrong all this fucking time.

It doesn't get any easier than the way I did it. And it works. Cut and paste the code and for the video you want, copy the shit after the equal sign and plug it in. If it means anything, of all forum members, I kind of like that it is hard for you, lol.

Here's what I have been doing. I copied this to a notepad txt file.

Code:
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xxxxxxxx?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

Just copy this and paste all the crap on the youtube url of the video you want after the "=" and substitute it where I have all the "xxxxxxx" action above (leave everything before and after).

v/xxxxxxxx?

For the url https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRNGpATRCrI I used:
Code:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TRNGpATRCrI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

Adam,
Thank you for taking the time to explain that. But at the risk of coming across as completely thick, I still can't make it work out. I believe I followed the instructions to a T. And then I tried different variations of what you posted. Maybe I'm just copying the wrong URL (as youtube has different URLs for the same video)?

I tried embedding this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhW5IFcxpsM&feature=youtu.be

The problem is that Youtube is abandoning Flash embeds. Any video uploaded after they made that switch won't embed. You can embed older videos still because they don't want to break stuff people already embedded (yet).

The key is to input this = fhW5IFcxpsM from the URL of the link you posted into the xxxxxxxxxx portion of the embed tool Adam posted. If you quote or edit this post you can see what the embed script actually looks like.

that embed code doesn't work in the preview, but does when you post it. odd.

none of which escapes the fact that the footer on this still says:

;) just saying..

is scaremongering. there's nothing you can do in the bbcodes that isn't completely and easily reversible from the admin area. not to mention, there's nothing that will have any effect on 'normal' posts that don't make use of the [ ] brackets. you monger of scare.

You two are comparing apples to oranges I believe. Changing the php code of the forum isn't the same as adding a custom tag in phpbb3. Changing the php code can absolutely kill the forum. Adding a custom bbcode tag in phpbb3 isn't likely to do anything that can't be reversed quickly. Then again, it's easy to under a php code edit so long as you have a backup copy.

...but really the solution to this is to upgrade to phpbb3. These kinds of problems will continue to pop up as time goes on. It's a consequence of using decade-old software.
