UBUNTU song/fundraiser. *UPDATED* on 1/15/13  Reply with quote

Download the song here: www.tinyurl.com/SageFrancisUbuntu
FEEL FREE TO DONATE AS MUCH AS YOU'D LIKE! Proceeds will go toward helping the families addressed in this song get a roof that works, beds, school supplies, healthy food, proper medical care, etc...

The full background story and lyrics are here: www.tinyurl.com/SageFrancisUbuntu

*NEWEST UPDATE 1/15/13*

So far we have raised $3,672.81!!! Instead of one single bed, the kids now have TWO separate bunk beds.
Also, the kids were taken out for school clothes shopping. Lookin' Durban fresh:

They are incredibly grateful for all your help and support. So am I. The next thing we’re going to do is get their roof fixed.

This is absolutely beautiful. Nice work on this Mr. Big Show! It portrayed an amazing story. Well done. Who did the production on this? Buddy?

Glad to hear such a positive result from your experience. Given your journalistic background, do you ever consider doing freelance pieces to raise awareness about things like this? Music is great, of course, but it strikes me that if the idea is educating the public that there is more than one way to skin the proverbial cat. Not my place to say, of course, but it's a thought of mine nonetheless.

I would love to be able to do something like this. Hopefully I'll be able to someday in the not to distant future.

To date I've never been able to raise more awareness or generate more interest in any particular subject than by making a song about it. Song writing, for all intents and purposes, is my craft. It's my job. I feel it's what I do best. That said, I've been eyeing all possible outlets and platforms. In regard to what this song is about, I do intend on writing a full story about what I experienced in Durban. If there was more time in the day, maybe I would have finished it by now. Instead, I've been traveling, juggling internet BS, handling label duties and taking care of my own career. The rest of my time is trying to keep my home and life in one piece. But sheeeeyittt...if Vice ever wants to pay me to go out and investigate some crazy shit, I have a few good leads and a lot of experience dealing with fucked up situations. Holler atcha boy!

It was a collabo job between me and a guy named Adam248.

Phil Cooper did the artwork. He did a great job with the portrait. Very happy with it.

RIP Nonoti

The frowns are aplenty there. The smiles came out after a while, but mainly only with the kids. I will say this though...when their community comes together and they find something to rejoice about, it's awesome. I was lucky enough to be part of what I can only describe as spontaneous hootenannies.

All around hell of a job. Very humbling.

I hope you don't mind if I post this. All of your pictures along with the lyrics are very powerful.

Flawed,
No worries. I'm glad you did. I've been hopping around from site to site trying to edit all my posts from yesterday to include the video. Finally made my way here. haha. It's much better than a soundcloud embed.

People are graciously donating. Very happy about that. I'll post the exact figure in a couple hours.

In about 24 hours we have raised $1203.71

That's with no officially promotion and virtually ZERO publicity or help from the typical hiphop/entertainment sites. This outreach is strictly from the SFR channels to the fans. I'd like for it to go beyond that, but as of now I'm really proud of our community and their willingness to help out. I'm going to keep updating this as we go.

Beautiful and humbling piece Sage. Just watched it at work and felt a bit watery eyed. I've been much more sensitive to stuff like this since I became a dad myself. Aside from the specific campaign you've launched to raise money for the roof, would you recommend a more general long-term charity involved in Durban? I'm planning to run the Bristol Half Marathon next September with the aim of raising as much money as I can for a children's charity. If there's one working to help these people, and doing it right, I'll do it for them. I've got dodgy knees that are making my training pretty painful at the moment, but I'll be taking 'Ubuntu' with me in my headphones as a reminder that my suffering is trivial.
