YouTube is getting rid of their old embed codes. What to do?  Reply with quote

*EDIT*

Redball found these and they work great:

http://www.gorissen.info/Pierre/files/YouTube_code.htm

chrome extension:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/embedtube/chdfoadfpombileacnfginmdhihahjjh/related?hl=en-US

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems that YouTube is making the full transition away from offering the old embed code which, as far as I know, is the only way we can post videos on this forum.

Is there a way around that? Or is there something we can do with this forum to make it do we can embed videos with the new embed codes?

I believe it will require updating to a newer version of the board software. I'm not an expert though.

I feel like the last time we updated this forum was in 1887. I'm scared of what will happen if I try to do something like that.

in the admin, if you go to the 'posting' tab across the top, you'll end up on the 'bbcodes' page.. look across to the right and hit the 'add new bbcode' button. then, fill out the boxes like:

first box:

Code:
[youtube]http{TEXT4}://{TEXT1}youtube.com/{TEXT2}v={IDENTIFIER}{TEXT3}[/youtube]

second box:
Code:
<object width="425" height="350">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{IDENTIFIER}&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param>
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{IDENTIFIER}&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="350"></embed>
</object>

third box:
Code:
[youtube]YouTube video URL[/youtube]

then tick the last box and hit submit.

should mean that when someone goes to post something (in the normal forum. i.e., here), there'll be an extra button above the posting area that'll say youtube on it which will allow people to drop in a video url and have it displayed. or, just type in something like

Code:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIx_b41wzbs[/youtube]

and that'll get translated into an actual video embed.

does that make any sense(?) i just tried in on an old install of phpbb that i've got - but there's a good chance that this version of the forum is actually much older so all of that ^ could be completely irrelevant.

I'll admit. I'm a-scared to make this change out of fear that it will fuck up things that I can't reverse.

you'd have to be on some Jonny Lee Miller in Hackers type shit to be able to fuck the forum up from that area.. the worst that could happen is it wont work, in which case, you just remove the code that you entered with the big red cross that'll show up next to it.

updating the forum is the worry but even then, done right, it shouldn't lose all the data..

I've poked around in the admin section for a while now, but there's no "posting" tab anywhere and I can't figure out how to get to "bbcodes" anywhere. This is definitely something I'd like to leave to Redball if he has any interest in helping out. I'm going to make him an admin right now so he can determine whether I truly am a code-dolt or not.
