I'm not sure how many people listen to against me on this board, but they are one of my favorite bands and I know sage has done some touring with them...I can't find a serious discussion anywhere on the internet about this...such a brave thing he/she is doing. I've never known anyone who has done this, but I'm really glad this is happening because of the awareness that will come from a major musician going through what tommy/Laura is. |

That's interesting. Surprising as well I suppose. I toured with Rise Against through the north east and south in 2007. Unfortunately I didn't get to spend any quality time with the bands on that tour as I was all by myself, driving myself, doing my own merch, performing my show and booking my own hotel rooms every night. I still have nightmares about that tour come to think of it. Haha. But, yeah, Tom had a girlfriend who looked like a supermodel and they were in their own space during the entire run. I honestly don't recall having a single conversation with him that lasted more than 30 seconds even though he is the one who invited me on the tour. I was impressed by their show and I still enjoy their music (which can't be said for a lot of bands I've toured with.) Anyway, that's all I know about Tom. And if he decides to be a she, more power to her. Can't imagine any of this is easy. Got my support anyway. |

i saw tom play a solo show a couple weeks ago, and i noticed a difference about him: painted nails, long hair, dressed femininely. he killed it as always tho.
tom's voice is so powerful. im unfamiliar with the whole process, but i assume that the voice is gonna change. so im curious to see how the band changes. |

She is brave as fuck. Making that move is pretty rough especially at the beginning even without having to be a public person. It's pretty amazing that she's come out so publicly about it. Stuff like this is just one more step to us being viewed as normal people and not freakish third class citizens with no rights. Still a long way to go, but pretty good story. |

I love Against Me! Saw the tour with Sage. As I read this on another site this morning all I could think about is how incredibly brave this person is for taking a stand and living her life the way she wants to live it. No matter what happens to the band, I'll still be a fan. |

After Mina, this makes the second of my favourite vocalists of my favourite bands ever to go through this (that I'm aware of, I suppose).
Mina's voice changed for the better. More range now, but I don't know if that's simply something that's happened or related to her transition or not (unlike Laura, the details were never made public). Either way, I'm glad there's one place on the internet that I can come to and read about this and not have to wade through piles of bullshit.
Make some noise for yaselves, SFF. haha |

I miss that deep danzig like baratone of "River Runs Red" but that was gone before he became Mina. That remains one of my favorite hardcore/metal albums ever. |

love that record, still jam it to this day. they played in a really small club in my town, when they were supporting that record, what a killer show. an old friend of mine broke his ankle at that show, it was his first time moshing and he went down hard. all i remember about keith was that he was like a foot shorter than me and i'm kinda short to begin with. |

Anyone who heard The Ocean shouldn't be terribly surprised about this. Can't wait to see how the band grows with this. |

I'm still on the fence when it comes to transgender people. On the one hand, I respect their right to live their lives as they see fit, and to make autonomous choices therein. I also think that the psychological reasoning behind being transgender is compelling and tenable. On the other hand, there is something - to me personally - unsettling about fundamentally altering the physiology of the human body, such that genitals and hormones are modified from their natural state. This seems like too drastic a step to me, even though it is not my body, life, or decision. So I'm stuck somewhere in between accepting people as they are (or wish to be) and my own views on how far individual choice should go. Also, I say all of this not because I want to start a fight or denounce transgender people, but in order to initiate a frank and hopefully informative discussion.
On that note, I think the actions of Gabel and others are terrific if for no other reason that the open up a dialogue about sexuality, gender, and social morays. I may not understand or agree with their choice, but I know that it is something taken seriously and done with the best of intentions. |

Captiv8, do you feel that way primarily because making a decision of that magnitude seems im-fucking-possible to you and I? Or do you think you're just not fully knowledgeable on the science enough to be comfortable with someone making those changes?
Good for Gabel, I'm continually amazed by this type of putting-yourself-out-there courage. I don't know what I would do if I had to be that brave for even ten seconds. |

I'd definitely go with the former. I will never know any of the emotions behind this decision. I can only approximate them by trying to understand the psychology. There's also what I perceive to be a fairly significant gap between dressing as the opposite gender and fully committing to the physical aspects of that opposite gender. I'll be totally honest and admit that both weird me out. But again, I respect the decision of the individual here because I recognize - in my own limited way - the value of that decision for them. |
