Glassjaw is rock / metal depending on who you talk to. Where else should I have posted this? Should I have started a new rock/alternative thread? hahaha |

Anybody up on Coffins? Japanese doom death masters with some ultra guttural vocals. I think the thing I love most about metal is how ridiculously absurd it is, from the song titles to the album covers to the music itself. Like, people in metal bands have to know that they're characters and parodies of themselves that nobody but impressionable youths takes seriously, right? It's comedy.
Sure, there are some really fucking great metal bands out there, but most of them are just showing you how the wheel spins. For a long time I kept checking out bands from various genres and then bouncing to something else. Now I'm just utterly underwhelmed by what I'm hearing from new and familiar bands alike. And sometimes I'll hear something that I think is really great but then some chode ruins it with clean, soaring vocals. No. I can't tolerate that kind of shit because it's like this really transparent attempt to pander to more people. It's like when some punk bands thought they needed to trade in that nice angry rasp for a more conventional singing tone during choruses and shit. Not cool. There are right ways to do things and there are wrong ways. Clean vocals in contemporary metal are the wrong way.
This may be a clear indication that I'm getting old. Fuck it. I like my metal as intrusive, aggressive, and brutal as a proper skullfuck. But not as messy. |

I know - I know - I know... This isn't "Metal" but it's pretty close. My band just finished recording a few tunes before I dip to Albuquerque NM and I had to share this. You never know, you just might like it!

I've been really disappointed and underwhelmed by recent metal releases lately. It's either derivative or awful, sometimes both. I suppose that's there only so much to be done before it it's all far too repetitive. |

Our flavors in the ice cream of metal are so different. I want more fancy peanut butter cups and Heath bars, and you want your vanilla to taste more like how vanilla used to taste when Black Sabbath invented it. |

Ahab is one non-brutal metal band I really enjoy. I only have their first record, but I imagine this one and their second effort are just as good. Good call, Neuro. |
