Using and HDTV as computer monitor?  Reply with quote

So I'm thinking of getting a 32' tv as they are on sale super cheap right now. Can I run directly from my video card's (NVIDIA 560ti) HDMI out into the TV? Will this work good for gaming etc? It just seems too easy because large computer monitors are so much more expensive than a tv of the same size.

Anyone with experience doing this? Thnx

I don't see why this would be any problem other than eye strain if you plan on sitting close up. Just last weekend my roommate had a pc game playing on his 50" plasma tv via HDMI and it looked great.

I hook my laptop up to my tv all the time. It works great for movies and I once successfully played some Civ IV.

I did it with a 32" flat panel TV. Bought a pimped wall mount from monoprice, never looked back.
My work monitor now looks teeny.
Also, I find myself watching TV on the thing sometimes, too. Imagine that.

I recently built a DVR and hooking it to the TV was quite painless. Using a newer video card and an HDMI output you will have no problems with resolution. My box had Intel HD 3000 graphics and it worked fine. In all likelihood your computer will recognize the TV and automatically set the output to its native resolution.

These are the native resolutions:
1080p: 19201080 (also 1080i will do this, but I wouldn't advise doing 1080i)
720p: 1280720

A benefit of doing this is if your computer will do audio over HDMI. If this is the case then you can make use of decent TV speakers. Plus TVs are more multipurpose so you can hook other junk up to it and only have one screen.

However, you need to realize that you're limited to a 1080p max resolution. If you're sitting close to this thing that may make everything look huge. Worse, depending on how close you are you run the risk of being able to see the pixels, the screen door effect. You probably want to sit at least 3 feet away from the thing, but it may depend on how sharp your eyes are.

Woot Woot! Just got it working! 32 inch @ 1080p. it's glorious. I had to run around town at rush hour finding a HDMI to Mini-HDMI adapter, but this is awesome! Skyrim is stunning! Now to get wireless kryboard and mouse cause I am about 2 feet away and it is weird (as redball said)

Also anyone having trouble posting? I have to try like ten times as it keeps taking me back to login...
