I didn't see a thread specifically about the election. Probably because there really isn't much to discuss as I don't think it's a stretch to assume no one around here is voting Republican this go 'round.
I just saw this on Reddit and it was kinda the last straw for me:
I'm sure this is just the fringe sporting these but fucking christ.
Does anyone smarter than me think there is any way Obama doesn't get reelected? I don't think so but I've been wrong before... |

Obama could easily lose if the Republicans nominate Romney and the economy tanks (which could very well happen if the EU implodes or if gas prices get out of control). |

I think that if the economy goes down the shitter, the Romney argument-- that he is the proven "executive" who knows how to create jobs in the "private sector"-- becomes very appealing to swing voters. Just read this article:

John Roberts. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, 57 years old, appointed in 2005 by a Republican. 7 years served.
Antonin Scalia. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 76 years old, appointed in 1986 by a Republican. 26 years served.
Anthony Kennedy. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 75 years old, appointed in 1988 by a Republican. 24 years served.
Clarence Thomas. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 63 years old, appointed in 1991 by a Republican. 21 years served.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 79 years old, appointed in 1993 by a Democrat. 19 years served.
Stephen Breyer. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 73 years old, appointed in 1994 by a Democrat. 18 years served.
Samuel Alito. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 61 years old, appointed in 2006 by a Republican. 6 years served.
Sonia Sotomayor. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 57 years old, appointed in 2009 by a Democrat. 3 years served.
Elena Kagan. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. 51 years old, appointed in 2010 by a Democrat. 2 years served.
Of those nine justices, three of them are over 75 years old and three have served at least 21 years -- meaning that either way we count it, a full third of the court will have arrived at the average retirement age by the end of the 2012-2016 Presidential term.
We'll probably see two of the three oldest Republican appointees retire if a Republican is elected President this November. We'll probably see Justice Ginsburg retire either way.
I think that if you oppose Citizens United, support same-sex marriage, or support a woman's right to have an abortion, it would be incredibly short-sighted not to vote to re-elect President Obama this November. Under Obama's leadership the Democrats have sold out progressives on a number of important issues over the last three years but there's no doubt in my mind that the next two Presidential terms are going to shape the way this country works for the rest of my life.
We don't get to fully judge Obama's Supreme Court nominees for a while yet, but the Citizens United ruling would almost certainly have gone differently if we had elected Gore in 2000 or Kerry in 2004. |

The other day I switched my affiliation from 'non-affiliated,' which I had been my whole life, to Republican in order to vote in my state's primary in May. I wanted to go home and bathe in bleach afterward. Anyway, not sure who I'll vote for in the presidential primary. I'll probably just leave it blank. |
