I've never heard of Daddy macs, but I just looked at the website and it seems like a cool spot. Is it gonna be a discman show? I'll be there as long as I can get outta work early. |

Cool, i may hit up the LA show, but i'd probably go alone. I don't really have friends around who listen to hip hop anymore. Going alone always kinda sucks but it didn't stop me from having a blast at the last sage show i went to. |

this is gonna be a fun run...
i'm missing the LA show ( *so many tears* ), but only because i'll be in LV that week for the annual "march madness" of my "men's group"...
so i'm taking a bunch of NYC banker dudes, who have never heard of sage francis, to the show at marky mark's, or whatever it's called.
hope i get another pic of me and sage for my collection. it will be my 4th. happiness abounds. |

Rhode Island’s Sage Francis emerged from the turn of the century indie rap boom and backpacker movement as the godfather of confessional hip-hop. Set against a genre historically predisposed toward image over reality, Sage favored a poetic delivery fraught with the more harrowing side of the human condition. His official debut Personal Journals, released on Oakland alt-rap label Anticon, built on a formula he had hinted at on his Sick Of... mixtapes and created an entirely new style of revelatory hip-hop. The album allowed the listener an unprecedented glimpse behind the curtain into a rapper’s struggles with depression, a father’s crippling drug addiction, and a sister with serious cutting issues.
From there on the floodgates opened and out poured like-minded artists such as Atmosphere, Eyedea, and Aesop Rock, creating left-field hip-hop with hearts firmly on sleeve. These emotionally vulnerable emcees spoke to a new generation of fucked-up kids, much in the way Nirvana had a decade prior. Labels such as Anticon and Rhymesayers and Definitive Jux, who offered a platform for the confessional movement, thrived in an epoch where college radio still meant something and wide-eyed kids traded burned CDs of their indie-rap heroes. Many San Diegans may recall the era when freestyle cyphers routinely formed in parking lots and storefronts after local shows at shithole, teen-centric venues such as the Scene and Epicentre in the days before indie rappers could book gigs at the Belly Up and Casbah. It was a strange and beautiful scene that seemingly vanished as quickly as it had appeared, and one of its defining moments was undeniably the release of Sage’s Personal Journals.
Looking back now, a decade after it hit independent record store shelves, the album is as relevant today as it was in the post-9/11 world where it first resonated. The themes contained in songs such as “Runaways” and “Broken Wings” speak as loudly as ever. With that at least partially in mind, Sage Francis is playing a string of one-offs to mark the ten-year anniversary of that groundbreaking record. Having hung up his touring hat in 2010 following the release of the indie rock-influenced Li(f)e to focus on running his Strange Famous Records label and cultivate his greying beard, Sage has become an elusive creature, difficult to catch live anywhere and particularly on the West Coast. A showman who leaves it all on the stage and brings filthy, gallows humor along to counteract the abyss-staring nature of his catalogue, Sage constantly changes his live presentation via subtle improvisation and an array of backing bands. The Providence-based wordsmith has played countless memorable gigs in San Diego, from his first live band tour stop at the extinct Canes to his face-melting performance at Soma some five years back on Father’s Day, which included a spontaneous, between-song “Happy Father’s Day...to my dick” rant, its lack of recorded documentation tantamount to war crimes. Those within driving distance of the Belly Up would do well to make the trip out to catch the enigmatic Sage on March 18. |

Awesome show last night. I was disapointed I missed most of Inspired Flight, but what I saw was good.
This was my first time seeing the Metermaids and I'm glad I did. They put on a great show. I was especially impressed with their back-and-forth rap. Shades Off was the song I was really hoping to hear and they didn't let me down. They had me in suspense though, as they saved it for their last song. Well played for sure. My only critisism was that Swell had a habit of mouthing Sentence's lines. It didn't take away from the performance, but it remknded of the early Fresh Prince episodes.
Sage's set felt like a mixtape; a verse here, an intro there, another verse over a different beat. It was a really god way to keep the old material fresh. I can't get enough of Come Come Now/Mourning Aftermath over Closer to God.
Some douche was acting up right at the start of Sage's set and threw a variety of things. Sage figured out who it was then looked at him real hard. "You look real fuckin' drunk, homie."
Someone else threw their drink at a girl and started a fight up front. I felt it tied in rather well with That Ain't Right.
There seemed to be an awful lot of people filming during the show, which is a peeve of mine. Someone behind me was filming with their flash on, even though they weren't close enough for it to do anything. I made a point of waving my arms in front of their camera. Another dude next to me I politely asked to stop filming. He felt it was okay because he had an unused ticket cause his girl didn't come. He stopped for a few minutes, then took a few steps away from me and started filming on the sly.
The encore was exceptional also, but I'll leave it at that.

All of these shows had an element of crazy. My only regret is having too many long drives which meant I couldn't really have quality chill time with the fellas. But work is work, and we did our damn thing. Most of them were sold out which is always good. Girls were in FIGHT mode at these shows. I saw multiple fights from the stage. Almost had to stop a song once. Almost. Alas, the show must go on. Many thanks to the Metermaids for making LA bow down to Brooklyn. Well..almost. It was worth the effort. Haha. San Diego and San Francisco ate it UP, but LA is still a little sore about Biggie being the greatest of all time and all.

In San Francisco we pulled off MacGruber's "Celery Dance" in a major way.
Also, big ups to Hugo who joined me on the full run to help with merch services. He held it down at the booth EVERY night, and saved me from having to worry about that side of things. Oh, and I also got into a couple altercations. Can't forget about that. People who drink too much and lose all concept of what is or isn't acceptable need to either master their high or step the fuck off.
