Check out Yndi Halda.

I will second Caspian.

Russian Circles are dynamite.

Gifts from Enola is like Explosions in the Sky but jazzier.

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert. is like Gifts from Enola.

Joy Wants Eternity is very similar to EITS.

This May Destroy You as well.

Check out the record label Mylene Sheath. Most, if not all, of their bands are instrumental awesomeness.

After giving a bunch of recommendations the other day I decided to check up on Mylene Sheath and I came across Beware of Safety. I'm not going to embed a youtube link because my laptop is a bit bogged down at the moment, but they sound really good. The still have some of the so-called crescendo-core vibe of EITS, but I think they're onto a little something different as well that helps them stick out.

Another band I forgot to mention yesterday is Evpatoria Report. The range from ambient to something akin to the metal of Pelican, though their music is frequently quite delicate and really nice to listen to.

And in case you guys are wondering I went through this phase were all I wanted to listen to were instrumental bands so I could read and enjoy music at the same time. Words for my eyes and ears at the same time create concentration problems. It's like today's classical for me. Good for writing as well.

On the electronica tip I can't recommend Umberto's From The Grave enough. It's a concept record the approximates a horror movie soundtrack from the 70s and/or 80s. There is something distinctly Italian about it, like it's channeling Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci.

I've been getting more and more into sweeping instrumental music lately as something to tune out noise and boredom while I'm reading. As a result I've discovered, apparently quite late, the Japanese band Mono. Goddamn. If Explosions in the Sky is driven by crescendos, Mono is driven by subtlety and decrescendos. Though both of these bands are cut from the same basic cloth their on either side of the spectrum. Mono focuses more on arrangements that vary from sparse to layered, in true orchestral form. I'm really loving these guys right now. They have a huge catalog to look into as well, and that's always exciting. So far I only have One More Step and You Will Die and it is terrific. So much going on in one little record.

I've been playing in a new band lately. We've been writing like a mo fo recently and I wanted to share an instrumental that we recorded this past weekend of one of our tracks. in the next few weeks there will be vocals added to it but for now I'm pretty happy with how it stands on it's own.

Sky Traffic Instrumental by Sound the Silent
