We haven't had a suggestion thread for flicks in a while.
Few I've watched recently that were entertaining:
Storm of the Century - older Stephen King TV miniseries. Really fun.
Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle - strange and kind of pointless, though entertaining.
Crazy Stupid Love - so good. way better than what I was expecting it to be.
Super - like Kick-Ass but way darker and intense.
Standard Operating Procedure - documentary on Abu Graib
Hot Coffee - doc on tort reform, pivoting off the spilled hot coffee law suit from years back. this is a must watch.
I always get so many good selections from here...keep 'em coming! |

I recently have enjoyed True Grit and Hobo with a Shotgun. Hobo with a Shutgun is just fun. True Grit is a western and I'm biased when it comes to westerns. |

Finally got around to watching Lars and the Real Girl and it was fantastic, one of my new favorite flicks.
Also on the Ryan Gosling filmohgraphy, Blue Valentine was top notch. He's really been taking some quality roles and I heard Driver was supposed to be great, anyone caught that yet?
I was pleasantly surprised by Catfish a while back, it's a documentary about this guy who meets a girl over the Internet whom he forms a relationship with and then comes some crazy twists. |

Gosling's my favourite actor right now, every role he does is incredible.
I've seen bits and pieces of Super and that movie is fucked. way too much realistic looking violence for a movie starring Dwight Shrute.
I really want to see Planet of the Apes, because I like the idea of Apes fucking shit up. |

I was skeptical going into it but James Franco being part of it convinced
me to go, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes was really good, great setup for a franchise. Hopefully they don't screw it up after this. |

i recently watched all 5 of the original movies , ive never seen them before, i enjoyed this movie series very much, the tim burton film was cool but ehhh it stands alone, i really want to see this new one , i know its supposed to start the series over from scratch so its going to be different but ive been actually hearing alot of good things about it |

Very intense. and funny. and violent.
Rainn Wilson was believable and perfectly insane.

The primary trope for like 90% of Korean films seems to be some variation of vengeance, usually be a lone wolf type just trying to hold it down legit. This is obvious in the Vengeance series, I Saw the Devil, Chaser, and just about every other Korean movie. I love it personally, because it makes South Korea seem like the land of vigilantism.
Strange that you would mention both Dogtooth and Winter's Bone, as I just watched them two days ago. I didn't care too much for Dogtooth, as I'm afraid most of the humor was beyond my liking. Winter's Bone, on the other hand, captured the starkness of the Ozarks and this strange sense of colloquial custom and justice. Bonus points for using a mostly local cast other than the obvious actors. John Hawkes does not get the credit he deserves as an actor, and I'm interested to see how Jennifer Lawrence does in her career.
I finally peeped Insidious the other day after someone else's (Rotty?) recommendation and I really liked the first half and thought the second half was kind of lame. The first half built up an extraordinary amount of tension, especially as they teased with the big reveal for a while. Did anyone else notice the scene where the Mom is walking around doing laundry after putting a record on and for a half-second or less you can see the little ghost boy staring at the wall? Amazing. Subtlety is the new horror these days. I don't want gore and spectacularly forced frights unless it's camp, which is sort of what the latter half of the movie was. Why Christ why did they 1) show the main demon and 2) make him look so cartoonish? I thought Hellboy's nephew was up in that mug. Finally, without spoiling it, what a predictable ending. I think the film makers were trying to suggest that was the insidious part with the father, but if that's the case then they fucked up with a photo they showed earlier. I don't know. And there was too much comic relief with the two ghost hunter dudes. |

i just watched super 8 and i'd have to say that this is the first jj abrams (sp?) project that i really enjoyed. it was like they took goonies or monster squad with e.t. and mixed it together. it had a good pace and that sorta familiar chemistry of 80's movies. it even had those funny light glares popping up like 80's movies. it was a fun watch for sure. |
