Bombing and Shooting in Oslo  Reply with quote

I'm surprised there isn't already a thread on this:

Quote:

As more information comes out regarding Anders Behring Breivik, he released a statement that the actions were “necessary.” In a book that he is suspected of writing he wrote ”Once you decide to strike, it is better to kill too many than not enough, or you risk reducing the desired ideological impact of the strike.” Anders’ attacks in Norway’s capital was among the deadliest shootings of its kind in recent memory.

Yeah, this is horrible. Not a minor event at all. I feel sorry for the poor kids who will be haunted by this in their future. I don't understand why a right wing extremist would go in and shoot up a bunch of Norwegian kids...but I guess it is a bit early to tell what his motives were.

I heard the most anyone can get in Norway is 21 years. I wonder if they will be changing laws. Sad, for an entire country, living in peace. :(

less than a week after facing a london based hearing into News Corps journalistic integrity regarding The News of The World, this is how murdochs london based "The Sun" tabloid (which will most likely extend its print run to cover the lost revenue from the closure of TNoTW) presented the story...

What's particularly wrong with that? Average and expected tabloid coverage, no?

i guess you could take that view

it is only the 9th or 10th largest newspaper in circulation in the world.

its head did just face a committee hearing to defend his and his sons commitment to journalistic integrity, across the entirety of his press.

and of course the UK, in which The Sun is the highest selling and most read newspaper, is currently going through a period of increased islamophobia and anti-immigration that the odd headline may or may not contribute to. i certainly didnt notice the huge "9/11" print.

not that it matters that the suspect is a blonde christian.

but yeah, i guess its all good, and yes expected.

To cut Murdoch some slack, it seems that The Sun is not the only (and certainly not the most credible) news source to run with the Al Qaeda story as many other sources jumped on that as well.
Here's an interesting take on how the terrorism angle came about:http://electronicintifada.net/blog/benjamin-doherty/how-clueless-terrorism-expert-set-media-suspicion-muslims-after-oslo-horror

What caught my eye first is the somewhat ill-placed camping advertisment above the headline.

In case you want to feel even more outraged:

And, I notice that the verbiage being used has (subconsciously, I assume) seeped into usage here as well.

The narrative has changed from "Muslim terrorist" to "right wing extremist."

My understanding is that someone can be held "indefinitely" for mental health reasons.

Yeah. That's my understanding as well. The maximum sentence is 21 years but they won't release someone who is a mentally ill threat ever. I imagine this guy will fall into that category.

I found this quote on the somanyshrimp tumblr:

Quote:

"In the safest, most boring country, the worst lone gunman shooting happens. The worst in the world, in history. But it will not make our country worse. The safe, boring democracy will supply him with a defense lawyer as is his right. He will not get more than 21 years in prison as is the maximum extent of the law. Our democracy does not allow for enough punishment to satisfy my need for revenge, as is its intention. We will not become worse, we will be better. We lived in a land where this is possible, even easy. And we will keep living in a land where this is possible, even easy. We are open, we are free and we are together. We are vulnerable by choice. And we will keep on like that, that’s how we want to live. We will not be worse because of the worst. We must be good because of the best." - Ola

It came from a user on the somethingawful forums, of all places.

I keep hearing the phrase "bombing suspect" despite the fact that he admitted to it.

It remains the accurate terminology to describe someone who has yet to be tried.

What's irritating is "alleged suspect."
