interview for Waste of Time zine 5/24/03  Reply with quote

1)Judging by the complexity of your music,I am assuming you are a literary
man.If my assumption is right. What some of your favorite books?

"I guess that's a common misconception, because I get this question a lot. Sadly enough, I haven't read too many books. Right now I am reading 'Shaky', which is a biography on Neil Young. I am thoroughly enjoying it."

2) Do you receive hate mail?

"I have received my fair amount of hate mail, yes."

3) IF so can you share a funny one?

"I usually always share the hate mail I get on my website, www.non-prophets.com. One that makes me laugh and pissed off at the same time is when a guy tried telling me I was hypocritical for touring in a van while I criticized Americans for driving SUVs."

4)Do you feel obligated to your local scene and try to help out young kids
whenever possible?

"You know...I really don't. I don't feel an obligation at all. I help them out as much as I feel the need to help out any other scene...which isn't a whole hell of a lot. I like to help young kids when I can, but my approach might not be the best for them. I try to be aware of how shitty I can be sometimes."

5)Hmmmm...Over the past two years it seems like you have gained a small
loyal group of listeners. How does this affect you?

"well...it keeps the ball rolling I guess. I don't know how it affects me. I want to say that it doesn't affect the things I say or think, but maybe it does. If I knew that my entire fanbase was 12 yr old girls I would probably stray from writing Whore Ballads. Because I am a sell out like that."

6)How long have you been an Emcee?

"Hmmm...I have been rapping since the age of 8. I don't know when I actually achieved the prestigious status of 'emcee.'"

7)How was the process of making Personal Journals?

"Grueling, as I imagine the process of every album to be. It took a lot out of me. It made me think a lot about my life. My past, present and future. I considered many things into the equation that is Personal Journals. I wish I could do it over. From scratch."

8)The tracks on Personal Journals all seem intensely personal was it hard
for you to write some of the songs(like Runaways or Crack Pipes) on the
album, because you felt you were giving too much of yourself away?

"I never feel uncomfortable about giving myself away. Ever. I have nothing to fear. Should I be worried that people might find out I am...human? haha. I don't know. I am good/bad, happy/sad, strong/weak. Like you."

9)Any insight to young kids who want to try writing lyrical rants?

"Depends on who they're writing for. Most importantly, be fair to yourself and your listener. Don't try to pass yourself off as something you're not."

10)Anything about your Epitaph deal that people should know?

"I urged them to put me on the Epitaph label rather than one of the subsidiary labels that Epitaph has."

11)what happened to the other questions?

"They were answered in all the other interviews I've done. Go find them!"

"..so it's not just a clever name...."
