Volcano erupts beneath glacier in Iceland

(CNN) -- The Grimsvotn volcano under the Vatnajokull glacier in Iceland was erupting Saturday, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

A dark cloud of smoke was rising from the glacier, and scientists were flying over the scene to evaluate the event, according to CNN affiliate TV2 Iceland.

The last eruption of the volcano was in 2004, TV2 Iceland reported.

Last year, another Icelandic eruption, of the volcano Eyjafjallajokull, attracted worldwide attention after its ash cloud disrupted air travel across Europe.

Sitrun Kapitola, manager of the Islandia Hotel Nupar, which is close to Saturday's eruption, said she could see a cloud of smoke over the mountains, and ash was falling around the hotel.

Police were telling her and others that there was no need to evacuate and there was nothing to fear, Kapitola said.

"We see it very well," she said.

"It's nothing compared to the other one," she added, referring to last year's dramatic Eyjafjallajokull eruption.

Tourists at the hotel were excited to see the eruption, watching the events unfold while eating dinner, she said.

"It happens every 10 years," she said. "It mostly produces water."

Grimsvotn is Iceland's most frequently active volcano. In 1783, a 16.7-mile fissure system from the volcano produced the world's largest known historical lava flow over a seven-month period, damaging crops and livestock, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. A resulting famine led to the loss of one-fifth of Iceland's population, according to the Smithsonian website.

Well we're still here and everything is fine... It's too bad that Iceland and the Philippians had some natural occurrences happen today... It's going to give wind to the "believers." I wonder how long this will drag on for now, or when Mr. Camping will say that he found new documents proving that the Rapture will be in another 10 years... Too bad he won't be alive for that.

Here's a Rapture celebration song by the Deftones - We made it!!!

The Earth does big farts.

Although if i was gonna start my rapturin' anywhere, it'd probably be Iceland.

Kind of feels like a beginner/tutorial level to the armageddoning.

If so, and Iceland is just the beginning, I hope Bejork makes it out in time.

In the rapture themed christmas special movie in my mind, Bjork is the final boss of Iceland.

She enters the room with wolves at her side.

She fights by manipulating sound waves.

Jesus is played by Joe Pesci.

He shoots her with a shotgun.

ACHTUNG!: THE APOCALYPSE HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED.

Please make amendments to your rapture vans & t-shirts.

The first two prophecies may not have come true, but i think this third one needs to be taken seriously.

Oh man Mr. Camping needs to give it up already. How many times can someone be wrong about this and still get media play? At least I'll be able to get married in July now, so that's cool. His followers need to wake the fuck up... They're going to have nothing to come back to when this is all said and done.

Harold Camping looks like he could go any day now himself. Won't that be a sad sad day...

Dunno if it was the worst rapture ever, William Millers 1844 rapture fail got labelled "The Great Disappointment" and gave us Jehovah's Witnesses and the 7th Day Adventists.

Unless this one spawns some wacky tribute-cults after the October fail, and at least one guy throws himself off a barn, it won't rate for me.
