Metal is such an ambiguous term. What is Metal to one person isn't metal to another. Like some people would say KoRn is metal. Someone would consider "Hardcore" music like say Norma Jean or Circle Takes The Square not Metal, but heavy rock. Some would only consider bands Like Slayer and old Metallica to be Metal but not tr00 metal like Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse. Then things like Pig Destroyer are "grindcore".

Anyway, I grew out of Metal for the most part(whatever it is exactly). It's hard to find diamonds in the pile of shitstorms out there. And even if you do, they sound a lot like something else that had been done before. I still have some bands and songs I revisit from time to time.

I've made some recent suggestions so I'll stand by those. I do, however, want to point out who I consider to be the best drummer period right now. Blake Richardson of Between the Buried and Me has technique and concentration like you wouldn't believe. This is a really long video of him, but it's worth it if you're into drumming.

The only comparison out there right now is John Longstreth, whom I think is faster but doesn't necessarily have the versatility of Richardson. If you can get past the theatrics of this video, you can at least hear the pure speed at which he plays for Origin. Their style of grind is super fast, but it's also inherently repetitive. Some folks like that, some don't.

Then there's Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy, who is a touch slower on the blastbeats and gravity rolls, but still a legend in his own right. Enjoy this drum solo video of him going to town on his kit.

Edit: I've forgotten Dave Witte, who has performed most notably with Burnt By the Sun, Melt Banana, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Municipal Waste. This is the drummer's everyman. I couldn't find any videos of him that aren't live, but you can check him out in the obvious places.

Cripes. I need to add a few things. Neuro, I agree with your assessment of Skeletonwitch. First off, what a great fucking name for a band. Second, I saw these guys live with Trap Them, Toxic Holocaust, and Black Dahlia Murder. Trap Them, I think, were the best band there, but Skeletonwitch were a close second.

Here's a soundclip/vid for Trap Them:

Secondly, it needs to be said that the thread title reminds me of someone I know with Tourette's. One of his main fixation words is "metal" except he says it with a big buildup, like "MMMMMMMMMMMMetuuuuuuuullllllll." He is indeed a fan of metal music, so it works out ok.

i'd have to say that one drummer that really impresses me is brann dailor from mastodon. he definitely makes that band what they are, i love his style.
also, gene hoglan is a drummer that has had a very impressive resume and you never hear much about him

those two cats are phenomenal for very different reasons but both are obviously fantastic. billy rymer(dillinger escape plan), ben koller(converge), chris pennie(ex-d.e.p., coheed&cambria) are 3 cats who stick out to me in metal who are amazing technically but are also very creative. especially pennie & koller.

Ben Koller: Converge's Vengeance Sampler

Chris Pennie: D.E.P. w/ Mike Patton's When Good Dogs Do Bad Things

too lazy to embed.

i agree with pennie, he does some crazy stuff. i just wish DEP hadn't turned into such a crappy band, years ago they ruled. the last thing i really enjoyed from them was the ep with mike patton.

I liked the Watain album that came out last year. And the High on Fire, Kylesa albums. The last Baroness album was good, as was the Torche EP. I have to be in the right mood for metal usually.
