Finally picked up Klein's Shock Doctrine. It's been sitting on my shelf since Christmas, and now I figure I should squeeze it in before the academic year starts and I'm swamped with those kind of texts. Anyway, at 200 pages in it's pretty fucking excellent. Klein writes in a really clear and precise style, so even if you know nothing of economics or politics this book will make sense. I've never been a fan of Friedman, but I now have more reason than ever to despise him and his followers. I've also been interested into learning more about Keynes and his theories. So, to sum up, great book that should be read by everyone. This needs to be required reading ASAP, right next to A People's History and Planet of Slums (thanks for the rec, Icarus). |

Just finished two books that really illustrate the social turmoil leading up to and occurring directly after WWI in the United States. The first is about the clash between religious fundamentalists, represented by William Jennings Bryan, and rational scientist/agnostic/atheist types, represented by Clarence Darrow. The Scopes trial was staged, by Edward Larson uses it as a foil to provide a history of the times. The second book is about the second incarnation of the Ku Klux Klan: why it was revived, for what purpose, and to what end. Athens, Georgia during WWI and immediately after is the focal point, though MacLean compares Klan activities there with activities elsewhere. Its a fascinating read, and reveals that there was much more to the KKK agenda than pure racism, although that was always a strong theme. In many cases their cause was much more rooted in class and morality, specifically what they regarded as their chivalrous duty to protect, often with violence. The concluding chapter is of particular interest, as the author points out some parallels between KKK and fascism in both Italy and Germany.

Zinn's book is a masterpiece. I've got the Dawkins book queued up, but I've got a lot of more pressing reading for school first. Specifically, Raul Hilberg's Politics of Memory and Norman Finkelstein's Holocaust Industry. Both look dynamite. |

I am actually reading Zinn's book online. They have a whole website dedicated to it, but staring at my screen reading for that long hurts my eyes so I will probably make a trip down to the public library to get the paperback. |
