| The "DarkNet" |
|
|
So I have been doing some reading about the internet.
It seems that there is a whole subsurface of the internet, that is not available via google and normal methods etc.
here is a very good article
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/nov/26/dark-side-internet-freenet
http://freenetproject.org/
This basically consists of webpages that people do not want to be easily accessed. Mostly corporate stuff, snd the odd chat among "anonymous" users.
BUT
I hear that it goes further. Those I have spoken with say that it involves things one would never want to see, or deal with.
I haven't been brave enough to go yet.
Apparently, you have to download a thing for FireFox called .tor (not torrents)
Estimations are that the "darknet" (anything you cannot reach from a modern search engine) is up to 500,000 times as large as the actual internet.
Keep in mind most of it is encoded, such as the Italian Military's guide to cold weather survival, which just got decoded.
My question is does anyone here know anymore about this? I find it absolutely fascinating. |

That sounds pretty cool, although I doubt it's "500,000" times the size of the regular internet. What's that even mean? |

That is the current "highball" estimate by most people who study the web. Consider the fact if you study in a university or work in a corporation, your homepage/login page will not show up on google for good reason.
That is considered "DarkNet" so just imagine how many pages there are out there like that hosting tons of info. |

Corporate intranets are considered part of the "DarkNet"? Most intranets I've been privy to, including many in the DoD, are anything but interesting.
I checked out freenet back in 01 or 02 and have no desire to do it again. I like that it exists but the depths of human depravity is not something I wish to further explore.
An aside. You guys like this Pudding cat? Really? The internet funny guy? Mr. Look At Me!!!11!!? Every time he posts in a thread I find even remotely interesting a small piece of me dies inside because I know not only do I have to wade through his bullshit but also the bullshit from his throngs of ass slappers. Consider me firmly off the jock of this discourse killing motherfucker. |
