he's an australian, hardcore socialist, documentary filmmaker and journalist. "The War On Democracy" is possibly his most famous film.

Assange turning himself in was a good move. This way he keeps himself alive (in theory) and avoids having to look over his shoulder constantly, and he can address the issue of the rape charges directly. On that note, the charges seem trumped way the fuck up and, in a situation like this, seem designed for the sole purpose of discrediting Assange and bringing him to "justice." I've said it before, but the best thing he has going for him is the massive amount of publicity he is receiving. Hopefully it inspires prominent people to come to his aid and defense.

I found this article about the charges to be interesting:

Man, this country is full of troglodytes. Kill the guy because he's exposing your government's improper usage of your tax money? Stupid ass hicks.

Doesn't turning himself in make it easier for the US to extradite him on charges of whatever the fuck they want?

Plus it's a lot easier to kill someone in jail, no?

I would assume he's passed on whatever control he needs to to the next guy down the list. Wikilinks is kind of way bigger than Assange, but our government needs someone to put on the wanted poster I suppose.

Thanks for posting that, Mean. It will interesting to see how this case plays itself out. I think it's really easy to hop on Assange's side if you're more liberal and forward-thinking, but we have to consider the possibility that these charges are true. This is a complex situation, and I imagine the trial will either really short or really protracted.

I've been following mostly all of this circus, but what is this I keep hearing about passwords and keys? Did he make a file available but without the password to open it?

^Yes. The file labeled "insurance." It's like a 256 letter password or something so it's not so easy to just get it open.

I think the file he's released contains only the portion of stuff they've released so far. They have TONS more that i'm guessing is either serving as an insurance policy or not cracked yet. i figure if he gets done on these clown sex allegations they'll release the password for this bunch. IRC is the place to be for the most up to date news on all this

Rape is such a strong charge I kinda want to hold my opinion, but it sure seems shady.

If this man dies in jail....sheesh....seems like it would be such an obvious corruptive plot the backlash would be...uh...for lack of a better, less meme-ish word...epic.

they wont want to make a martyr of him, althouh I think its likely that if this was kicking off back when bush cheney and other bad guys were in charge his body would have been fed to pigs along time ago

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure he isn't being accused of rape. He's being accused of having consensual sex without a condom. Which I believe is a crime and form of sexual assault in Sweden, and not to be taken lightly. But I doubt he is the first man accused of this crime in Sweden, I am sure he is the first that is the target of a cross-border manhunt as a result.

I'm not assuming he's innocent. I have absolutely no way of knowing that. But he was put on Interpol's MOST WANTED list even though he wasn't being charged with any crime, they just wanted to interrogate him.

Anyway, this is an interesting op-ed if you haven't already read it:
