My dad used to work on tree planting crews, logging crews, and a variety of other random forestry-related stuff. He had my brother and I convinced that his crew was really a bank robbing crew and they used the other stuff as cover. He'd be gone for weeks at a time sometimes for work, and come back with money and elaborate stories about how they used their chainsaws to rob banks, etc. I realized pretty early that he was really just working, and not robbing banks, but for a little while my brother and I were certain that he was part of a gang of forestry-themed bank robbers. |

I had cumulus nimbus down and most of the others. After my dad helped me with the last formation i gave my homework to the teacher who imediately pointed at this answer and said "This is most certainly not the correct answer"
I responded "sorry miss but thats what my Dad told me to put."
My dad convinced me that Cunninglingus was the correct cloud formation.
First time my Dad was in more trouble than me after a parents evening.
Your Dad sounds like a good time.
Yeah he is great. A real Joker. It was embarrassing when I was young but I look back on this stuff now and it is pure gold.
There was a time my brother had his mate over from school. The kid was a horrible snobby kid. My dad hated him. Whenever he use to walk up the drive my dad would just stare at him all serious, one of them 'you’re not from around these parts' kind of look. One day my dad caught this kid helping him self to stuff in the kitchen . So my pa decided to grab hi black widow catapult a pocket full of corks and a makeshift camouflage head gear. He took me along for the "secret mission." I am 3 years the younger of my brother so I was very willing to help take down one of his friends.
We hid by this hatch that had that had a plant in it (Camouflage head gear came in handy). This hatch connected the TV room to our kitchen. So while my brother and our target were watching TV my dad aimed. Next thing I know this kid starts hysterically crying. My Dad hit his target in the eye and so my dad drops the catapult and shouts "Run!” I just see my Dads legs going hell to leather towards our local pub. Meanwhile im left there having to explain to my mum what happened.
My mum did not doubt what I told her was the truth. I felt bad for ratting my Dad out. The worst thing was this was the second kid victim of my Dads blackwidow.
What an awesome guy. No sarcasm. I would definitely like to meet him. |

There was a family of little people that had a cottage down the road from my great uncles that we stayed at for vacations when i was a kid. I was told they were santas little helpers and they were on vacation too. held on to that one until i found out santa wasn't real.
until sex education in the 7th grade i thought the way you got a girl pregnant was by kissing until you had to pee and then relieving yourself inside of her. i also believed the way she had the baby was more or less a bathroom type thing too.
and to this day i still believe my childhood friend peters evil brother phillip had mind control over their dog nikki. nikki was the coolest dog ever, but as soon and phil came home it was a horrible mean asshole that you couldn't get anywhere near because he would bite your face off.
and the best one of them all, which my whole family believed. younger cousins anyway. my cousin bill was left in the sun when he was born and thats why hes darker then all of us. he himself believed it too until he found out about interracial relationships. im not sure what age we all found out, im sure it was different for all of us, but come on. they had like 20 kids believing BJ was permanently burnt from the sun instead of explaining that my aunt had a fling with a black dude on vacation in texas. and the saddest part of all is history repeating itself with my younger cousin michael who at 16 STILL believes that he has a skin disease similar to michael jackson, only hes getting darker. is it really that hard to look your kid in the face and tell them you cheated on your husband? |

Santa.
When I realized Santa wasn't real.
Well, I never really questioned the story. I was young. But then the older kids spoiled it and, well you just find out. Finding the Christmas presents (accidentally) was the icing on the cake. That and well, my parents began labeling gits from "Santa," legit WRITTEN in " quotations "
Sucked when I found out it wasn't real. Kept it alive for my nephew Oliver who is now old enough to know, and we both keep it alive for the 3 year old nephew. That's what it's really about though. |

When I realized at 8, within a week of my baptism, that my religion made absolutely no sense and probably wasn't an accurate guide to reality.
When I realized at 11-ish that evolution made perfect sense as a guide to reality. This occurred while having the theory explained to me cogently, or even in any kind of accurate detail at all, for the first time in my life. Eltron thinks he can change his mind on a dime, shit, I changed my entire paradigm on a dime. This was also, give or take a month, when I decided that all the major monotheistic religions were probably bullshit.
When I read my first two books on string theory. I was 14, and realized for the first time that I wanted to be a physicist. I finally started going to college for it 8 years later. I think this was also what caused me to finally decide, conscientiously, that I was an atheist.
When I was 21 and voted for Obama, and then he did like three of the fifty things I thought he was going to do when I voted for him and I realized, "Holy shit, my friends were right when they kept telling me he was just another politician, albeit black!" I would be jaded now, except that I still recognize that voting is effective enough an activity to be worthwhile. So really, nothing much changed in this instance, past the revision of my admittedly unrealistic hopes for Obama into something less prone to disappointment. |

Not to try to steer this off-course, because this thread is awesome. But I'd like to get this off my chest.
You say Obama has done only a few things YOU wanted him to do, which is not to say he hasn't done things that are good outside of what YOU wanted him to do. I'm not going to defend him on the DADT shit, or the fact that he's schlepped with gay marriage rights. But hot damn, at least he's not outwardly condemning gays like fucking Bush did - quite the contraire in fact.
I agree, Obama could've done some more progressive things. I'd rather have Socialised healthcare than the healthcare system that was improved upon. But I'd also rather have the new healthcare system than the fucking bullshit we had before.
And lastly, if you want shit to be changed, you got to do that shit yourself. Nothing is going to change if all you do is vote, then go away for the next two years. If you want this country to not be a piss-stain compared to other western democracies, you have to convince the rest of your apathetic friends to vote for people who are not just politicians.
I like what Tony Benn said in Sicko, "Democracy puts the power in the peoples' hands. If the people realized that they could vote to better themselves, they would, but there are powerful forces that don't want that to happen. So they make you miserable and afraid." Not the exact quote, but close enough.
Every Liberal I know is a God damn armchair activist, and I'm tired of it, and I'm tired of being one, too. We just fucking laugh at the Tea Party. We mock them. But, damn, they're stirring up the pot, right? We can do it too, and we can do it better, and for the betterment of this here country.
Through this rant, I realized where Sage was coming from with the importance of voting. So what if you voted for Obama, if you don't like what he's doing, get people together and demand he works for you!
Again, sorry about this. I just need to vent. Long fucking day. |

We do, but now the toys are videogame consoles, musical instruments, pens, paper, word processors and messageboards. |

on a somewhate similar note, when I was very young during the OJ Simpson trial I was at my grandparents house, and they had some cheap little black and white TV. My grandparents last name is Cochran, so I asked if we were related to Johnny Cochran, and I believed it for awhile. But I guess even with a black and white TV I should've been able to tell the difference seeing there's not a single black person in my family.
but still, I felt like my roots had a big part of getting OJ off the hook
and while speaking of OJ, i was just reminded of POGS. I had a nice OJ Simpson slammer where one side said GUILTY and the other was NOT GUILTY. Can't believe I was so into POGS, but whatever, i was like 8 |
