This is surreal.

Eyedea was hugely inspirational.
He was easily one of the coolest dudes I've ever met in this scene.
I've met him a handful of times and even had the pleasure of playing a show with him, though I never got to really know him. But the first time I met him is a favorite of mine.

One of the first underground shows I ever saw was Eyedea. Back then, I didn't have a great internet connection and a lot of the material that was handed to me was on burned CDs, so I had no idea what he looked like. I was wandering on Girard Avenue in Philadephia looking for the venue he was performing at and actually ended up asking some guy for directions. He said it was a few blocks down the street.

It wasn't.
I wandered back, thinking "That guy was an asshole."

When Eyedea took the stage that night, I realized he was the "asshole" who gave me the wrong directions. It was hilarious and his apology to me at the merch table made it even greater. The fact he remembered me because of this event years later really gave me the impression he was something special. And getting to open up for him and have him compliment my music pretty much fulfilled a dream I had since High School. Even if I was too busy acting cool to say so.

RIP Eyedea.
Thank you.

As I sit and watch the BET awards, I can't help but wonder why we still have some of these non-talent whack-ass MC's, but lost Eyedea today. Life's not fair.

Edit:
Not wishing death on anyone; just today feels unbalanced.

What the hell? When I first started getting into the underground scene, I started listening to Eyedea and Abilities. I thought Eyedea was an amazing emcee who was able to tell these wonderful stories and could write a song destroying his competition in the next one.

This is unbelievable.

This hit me like a fist to the face today.
Mike was someone I looked up to as I was first getting into music on my own and, upon finding out we were about the same age, gave me something to strive for thinking, "if he can do it at that point in his life, so can i." Later on he oddly and randomly became a huge supporter of the stuff I was doing and we carried on a conversation via a single myspace msg we kept building on, until I chose not to respond about a year ago as I was going through my own shit in dealing with not having "music as my base." I'd recently found myself thinking what he was up to, and wondering how to reconnect in responding to his last msg...too little too fucking late now I guess.

I can at least find contentment in knowing that he's finally and forever at peace. And I wish the best for his fam, fans and friends knowing that, together, they'll get through this terrible tragedy.

RIP Mike Larsen, you'll be forever missed.

wow. This definitely sucks. I discovered eyede right around the same time I started listening to sage. I have so many memories driving around with his music playing. I didn't like everything he did, but everything was worth checking out because he had the potential to blow you away at any moment

RIP Eyedea
